The directof of the Bruce County
Board of Education. is going along
with t e pro ee's change of heart
on the issue Of nacioua testing.
Paul Martindale, director of.
educations, said the. °program has
been changed so that the tests
reflect ctu rieulnum ethnic and
regional diversity, and give more
v rices a chance t:determine their
content.
"What -I like about this is the
emphasis is on improvement. If I
could pick one word to describe
education in Bruce County, it's
improvement," Martindale said at
the board's December 17 meeting.
He said there will not just be
standard tests in- the new national
program. Some students' projects
will be assessed, while parents have
input on the program.

know Cathy when I was your age
back in 1941, all l gUt was an
orange and maybe a wooden toy of
some sort. The things you're 'mid. g
for hadn't even been invented."
"You have to be kidding!, said
Cathy, "You must have actually
boring . Christmas if that is all you
got." Actually Cathy it wasn't
boring at all. Let me refill your
bowl of popcorn then we can sit
back and relax while I tell you a bit
about . what Christmas was • like
when I was a kid."
The excitement began a few days
before Christmas when the mem-
bers of my family started making
and hanging the decorations. We
made wreaths and ornaments,
strung the cards we got, and of
course put up the tree! Now, we
couldn't get artificial trees like you
can get now. We always had to go
out to the bush and cut down our
own tree. It was often 'a long cold
walk, and sometimes the tree
wasn't the best but it was always
worth it. By the way, that popcorn
you're eating, we used to string that
and put it on the tree.
The buzz of activity in the kitchen
on the 24th of December was just
-like a bee hive. ma and the girls
were scurrying about, preparing
food. Papa and the boys hadthe
nasty privilege of • killing and
cleaning the goose. There were
pies, cakes and cookies piled high
on the cupboard, and let's not for-
get "Mama's Famous Christmas
Pudding."
At last the "Big Day" had arrived.
The whole family was excited to
see what would be in their stocking.
As I already mentioned, we usually
got an orange and maybe a wooden
toy. Early in the afternoon relatives
and friends arrived. We all stood
around the piano singing carols
while Aunt Millie played. The cider
on the stove was warming while the
fire crackle. The grown ups chatted
and the children played games and
talked about the days events. After
a long day of excitement and good
food, our relatives snuggled into
their sleighs and rode home. My
tired family and I crawled into our
warm beds and after thinking about
our wonderful days drifted off to
sleep.
So you set Cathy, things weren't
as bad as you thought. Just because
we didn't as many gifts as you do
now doesn't mean we didn't have
fun. After all, being with friends
and faily is what truly makes the
day special

Martindale said developing,
"comptitive 10Ryear-olds" is not
the answer the fixing the economy.
"We need creative children who
are problem -solvers," he said.
