Make the buck go 'round ala Luce :t4a ° n , Here 1 am again - up on my pulpit "preaching" :. And the lesson, once again, is on shopping AT HOME#° In this economic climate, local merchants are feeling the squeeze and are trying to convince us to shop here. - One of our local business people hit the hall on the head when he said, it simply. Isn't' those travelling to Kitchener or London, •it's the many people in. cars and busses boating a steady path to Shop. in Port Huron, Michigan. Being realistic, we cannot blame anyone for hying to find a bargain. But, what_ happens to our town when our shopping.• dollars merrily trot down the highway to larger centres or worse yet to another country? Have you • ever stopped and thought about the nullifier of donations local businesses make to• minor eporis teams, local.charities, serviceclubs, or community activities? When retail- sales are low, donations dry up. • Area men and women work In our retail stores. That's local employment: if 'businesses Close, unemployment increases on a local level. A recent article I read told the following: "Minimum wage In Canada is six dollars an hour if you're over 18 yawns of age and $5.55 if you are under. 18. A check. with the U.S..con- sulate in Toronto told us the minimum wage in the United States varies from state to state, but the Federal government has capped it at $4.25 an hour. Accounting for the differen- ces in our dollar, the American worker is making about one dollar less an hour than we are, If they are making. the maximum minimum wage. If the American retailers pay less In wages, then that savings can be: passed on 'to the con- sumer." . .. it stands to reason the money we spend across the border is definitely helping the American economy. Ask yourself, what Is it doing for us as Canadians? Every dollar spent here in Lucknoiv and area circulates around. It helps pay wages or buy goods andservices, supports schools, churches, fire protection, Improve. roads and streets, increases property values and many other good deeds. We as Lucknow and area residents owe Some loyalty to our own. town. If you can't find what you need locally, at least, • have' some loyalty to your own country:and shop Canadian. (PL) 70 years ago Deeernhir 1591921 A poor sport this e A farmer in town on Saturday stated that while some of the hunters who go out from Lucknow for a day's shooting are affright, others are very unwor- thy disciples of Nimrod. Failing to get fox or partridge, they do not hesitate to take a shot at the farmers' geese or chickens which may be upon the road. He sug- gested that these poor sports should be reminded that even though the UFO didn't sweep the countryin the recent election, that doesn't give the town man the privilege of shooting'perfPetly tame UFO geese.
