Headlice are a nuisance. They Are unpleasant to have and bothers6ine to get rid of. However, headlice do not cause illness or disease. Headlice spread from one person to another by crawling. They cannot jump or fly. Anyone can get head - lice. When one child in a group becomes infested, you can be sure that more cases 'will occur if the initial case is not quickly identified and treated. Early -detection and treatment is important to preventing an outbreak. Parents or caregivers - should check their children's hair on a weekly basis to detect lice and/or eggs. The lice are often difficult to detect as they move very (middy. vow. They are tiny, wingless, flat -bodied insects, about 3 tam or 1/8 inch long. More easily noticed are the eggs of "nits". Nits are tiny, similar in size to dandruff, They are oval shaped and white or light greyish in colour, and usually are found close to the scalp, firmly "glued" to the hair shaft. When a person first becomes infested, they may not feel anything unusual. Weekly checks will help to detect an infestation early. If infestation is notdeterted, persistent itching will occur, September 12 marks the begin- the support Of each other to cope Thefail season topics for ning of a new season for the with the many demands of caring caregivers ; are sure to interest ' a locally -formed parent support group for young children._ .... -.. diver , ronnt..:il ding. parents. of Kids d U This the f h t clukke an s. w • year group a ' moms on sc oo '.age n. When checking for nits, find a location with good lighting. Pan the hair and examine small sections at a time. Check the entire scalp and hair for nits and live lice. Pay par- ticular attention to the hair near the scalp, behind the ears and around the nape of the neck. Nits are often mistaken for dandruff or hair casts, but are not so easily removed. If headlice or nits are found, treatment to get rid of them will be' necessary. Ask your pharmacist about the available treatments. They are available without a prescription. Follow the directions given with the product yon purchases The next step is to remove all the nits from the hair, either by pulling them off with your fingernails or using a special fine-toothed nit comb. The third step isto'clean combs, brushes, hats, ,clothing and bed - linens, as well as to vacuum carpets and upholstered furniture.
