CANCEL RIPLEY FALL FAIR
- There will be no WI fair - in
Ripley this year at least, it was
decided recently by the directors of
the Society. Various factors entered
into the Board's decision, not the
least of which is decreasing attend-
ance at the fair and a cetudn lack of
interest in the continuance of the
fair. '
Wingliam Fair Board earlier in
the year announced thatthere would
be no fair in ,that town this year.
Previously, for the past few years,
Witigham and Lucknow all
held then' shows in the same week,
so the decision to cancel Ripley and
Wingluto shows, should tend to
increase gate receipts and the num-
ber of exhibitors at the Luckaow
Fair this year.

RIDDELL WARNS OF CUT-
BACKS TO MUNICIPALITIES -
Municipal councils face a "tremen-
dous d'Alene' ahead because of
government cutbacks, observedjack
Riddell, MPP for Huron-Middles4,
. when he addressed the June session
of county council last Thursday;
Riddell warne:d municipationneilt
will see cutbacks by both provincial
and federal governments, meaning-
numicipalities will not be able to
rely as heavily on the funds avail-
able ftvm thew governments to
support many of the costs of aw-
ing program in pktec.
"The gbvermnent has backed
themselves into a center," said
Ridden, and they have cutback to
reduce their deficits."
Riddell made his comments to
council at their last session before
the summer recess, a meeting when
past wardens and local members of
parliament are guests OrCouneil for
the day.
Riddell observed the transfer .of
responsibility for able-bodied wel
fare clients back to the municipality
from family benefits, is one more
indication where more responsibility
will be placed on local municipal-
ities. County council learned at their
meeting that it was announced
recently that the province will Wight
negotiations shortly to transfer this
responsibility to local municiptd-
itie-s,
