Ball diamond proposal meets opposition
Rod, McDonagh and Cliff Mann of the
Lucknow Kinsmen Club returned to Luck -
now Village Council November 9. to discuss
the proposal to build a ball diamond south. of
Willoughby Street. between the Elgin and
Outram street road allowances.
McDonagh and Mann said they met with
Bob Symes who owns. lots in the area to
discuss the idea of using the Outram road
allowance for the ball diamond. Symes
would not agree, saying he wanted the road
allowance left open in case he chose to
develop his property.. Mann said they
offered to buy the lots.and Symes refused to
sell them.
Members of council could not understand
how Synies intended to develop the lots or
for what purpose as the lots are designated
Lions will n
hazardous land!, in the proposed secondary
plan and cannot be developed fot building
purposes.
• Reeve George Joynt told the Kinsmen
representatives council would look into the
matter/ and report back to the Kinsmen.
After 'McDonagh and Mann left the
meeting, council continued their discussion
• of the .proposed ball diamond.
• Councillor Ab Mowry wondered if the
Kinsmen proposed to incorporate parking in
their plans or if they expected to use' the
Royal Bank. and Liquor Store parking lots for
parking. Members of council doubt there is
room for parking and a ball diamond, on
suitable land in the area and agreed the club
should not expert to use the bank and liquor
store lots for this purpose.
Sevem members of the Lucknow Lions
Club met with Lucknow Village Council on
November 9 to present their proposal for
numbering buildings in the village.
Art Clark of Maitland Erigineering, Wing-
hampresented a map of the village and the
proposal to number, the buildings for
council's perusal
Lions spokesman Bill Adamson said the
• club was presenting the plans for the project
to council to obtain their authorization to
proceed with the second phase of the
project. the physical numbering of the
buildings. •
Council passed a motion giving the Lions
Club authorization to number the buildings
in the village and to purchase the actual
numbers for placement on the buildings.
• Councillor Murray said he' thinks the
reason the Kinsmen are promoting the idea
of second ball diamond in Lucknow is
because of the increase in the number of
• slo-pitch teams attending the Kinsmen
• Summerfest tournament. Murray said he
thinks the Kinsmen would like to have
- another diamond in Lucknow to avoid using
the Dungannon ball diamond for their
skr-pitch tournament.
Murray said he could not see the justifie
don for building another dintiOnli m
Lucknow on land which is only marginally
suitable.. Murray said the cost of building the
diamond oI unsuitable land 'Rakes it
unreasonable to proceed with the project
only to meet the needs of slo-pitch teams.,

I.B.M. Requests Increase
Council received correspondence from
IBM of Canada notifying the clerk -treasurer
the cost of printing the village's tax bills will
increase by 12 per cern.
IBM informed council. while individual
price changes will vary. overall increases
ono Iesst than 4 per cent.
Councillor Ab Murray suggested council
send 11364 a letter asking them to stay within
the provincial and federal guidelines of six
and five per cent. Mutray said council
should refuse to sign. the proposed agree-
ment with IBM midi they ask IBM to stay
within the suggested guidelines.
Councillor Eldon Mann commented if
council breaks down on the six and five per
cent guideline in this instance. they would
be expected to do it across the board:
• Lucknow pays a flat rate for the printing of
its tax bills because the order is smaller than
IBM"s minimum order, but the increase for
custom batchprocessing of tax bills, the
category Lucknow is designated to, is 12 per
cent, which will see an increase in the flat
rate.
