Mary was a delegate with the Junior Farmers United Kingdom Exchange whkh sent four Ontario young people ono tour of the Milted Khigdons for three months this summer. Rosemary was Mary's host while hi Northern Ireland and as a dairyspecialist arranged for Mary to see dairies in that country. • • Desmond reimion A 'reunion of the descend- ants of John Desmond and his wife Ellen Hickey was held• at St. Joseph's Church, • Kingsbridge, on August lst, • 1982. About 400 attended the Mass which was celebrated • by three. Desmond descend- ants, Fr. Michael J. Dalton of Courtland, Fr. Ed Garvey, CSB, of Houston, Texas, and Fr. Anthony Meagher of •Toronto. The Pastor of St. • Joseph's, Fr. Ed Dentinger CR, and Pr. Ralph O'Lough- • lin CSB of Missouri City, Texas, also assisted at the Mass. • ' John and Ellen Desmond are buried in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Kingsbridge, and after the Mass, a Memorial marker was dedicated in their memory by Fr. Dent- inger on behalf of •their descendants- • A buffet dinner M the hall and a snack -bar on the grounds were enjoyed by many. Fr. Ed Garvey. and Judge (ret.) Frank Donnelly Goderich entertained the group with anecdotes of old lines and a history of the )esmond family. A highlight of this celebra. ion was a "Mini Desmond History" prepared by a great granddaughter, Florence Meagher of1Valkerton, who also made a "Family Tree" comprising about 1400 nam- es of descendants. John Desmond (1796-1884) and Ellen Hickey (1804-1890) emigrated from Cork, , Ire- land, in 1847 with their family of nine children. After a short stay in Toronto, they settled in Kingsbridge, about 1850. Five children married - Mary married Richard, Wall; Johanna • married John Sulli- van; Julia married Michael O'Reilly; Ellen married Jam- es Donnelly and. Patrick mar- ried ,Martha Wall. Dr, Hum- phrey and Jeremiah remain- ed unmarried and two little girls, Catherine and Marg- aret, died at sea during the long voyage from Ireland, The majority of their des- cendants live in Ontario and Michigan.
