Canagrex is stabled
The canagrex Bill is being
needlessly delayed by the
House of Commons Agricul-
tural Committee, according
to Ralph Barrie, .president of
the Ontario Federation ' of
Agriculture (OFA).
"The OFA is worried that
the bill won't pass Parlia-
ment this session because
some members of the com-
mittee are using stall tactics.
This could :be a serious
setback for the agriculture
and.. foodindustries in Caen-
ada," Barrie said, : •
Canagrex is the proposed •
crown corporation designed `
to facilitate and promote
export of Canadian ' agricul-
tural and food products..
"The .OFA and the Can-
adian Federation 'of Agricul-
ture ' have lobbied for years
for Canagrex," Barrie said.
"We need it to fill the, huge.
gap betweenour potential to
produce and manufacture
products for. exports!,and your
actual export performance.''
He said a successful Cana-
grex will help Canada search
. for, and fill marketdemands
for products besides tradi-
tional exportstaples of
grains and oilseeds.
The Commons committee
has raised . concerns about
the extensive po vers of Can-
agrea to get involved : in
processing and storing sur-
plus products for later sales. -
"There's nothingextraor-
dinary about these powers,"
Barrie said. "The Agricul-
tural. Stablization Board has
done ' the same thing for.,
years, and isn't in competi.
tion with private industry. ' If
anything, they've helped

Barrie,said, the OFA be-
li'eves tht Canagrex won't
be in direct competition with
private exporters, "Private
industry has failed to capture
export opportunities for our=
products. Canagrex can pro- !
vide leadership ' where .
there's a gaping void."
The OFA urges members
