Lots of bugs.
Believe it or not - the host,
humid, and hazy days of the
week were great for br-
ing out the bugs.. Tuesday
of week was such a day.
John and Francie Stosik of
the 2ndconcession west next
to the Art Smeltzer farm
found .this colourful large in-
sect about the size of a large
butterfly. In turn they gave
it to Jean Anne and
Elizabeth, daughters of
Elmer. and Marianne.
Smeltzer neighbours across
the road:
They gave it in turn to
their father Eimer who
brought it here at noon last
Wednesday after he finished
his weekly trucking. It was
the large beautifully col-
oured cecropis moth or
American Silkworm moth.
Its abdomen was distended
with eggs. These hatch into
worms on larvae which feed
on tree leaves. When the
worm is fully grown in a few
weeks,it spins itself a cocoon
from a silk thread and rests
over winter inside its hard
shell inside the cocoon or
tent until next summer. •
Among the large moths
native to this area are the
Cecropia, the Polyphemus,
the Sphinx or Hawk moth
family, and the very
beautiful and also very rare
Luna moth a pale green col -
