1 Reeve Cunningham said they prefer M3,
"As I said, there could be a trade-off (M5
for M1), I can't say what the board is
thinking...but we could possibly ' lose
everything by ending up with M5," . said
Reeve Cunningham.
Turnberry Township Reeve Brian
McBurney said council should. support the
farm groups in their request for M3. He said
while M3 does not protect the Niagara.
Escarpment, he couldn't vote for M1.
"We can't eat stones," said Reeve
McBurney,
"I want to get'something straight, if we
drop our support of Mi, and weaken iI;, "s'3
support, would we end up with M5...we don't.
want M5," said Reeve William Bogie of
Colborne Township.
Reeve Cunningham- said he didn't want to
bias council, just inform them, but he felt if
Hydro'Ys without support on Mi, and 'M3'is.
not technically as good, M5 may be the
chosen route. .
Huron County will present its position to
the board which is currently hearing
evidence from participants to the hearing.
Marketing strategy
• *from page 4
Marekting intelligence
The. federation realizes there are many
shortfalls in farmers' ability to properly
market their produce. Historically, the
emphasis has been on production ' and
efficiency, but farmers have not been able to
propose a marketing plan acceptable to the
red . meat sector.
Farmers must strive to market their
produce in an ,orderly fashion, states the
brief, but Members of Parliament must. lend
their expertise and 'assistance in a compli-
, mentary, not :a dictorial fashion toward this
end.
Bank Seizure
The -federation is ,still very concerned ab-
out the lack of legislation protecting primary
producers, against loss of income in a
situation where a processor, packer, elevator
or • community sales barn has its assets
seized. No laws exist to guarantee the
producer be compensated for his products
taken in the action. Yet, workers' on the
FARMS
assembly lines have had this protection for
years, the brief points out. Wages are the
very first thing paid in a bankruptcy.
Insurance companies must be bonded to
protect policy holders against loss. Surely
it's time to provide the farmer with income
Iffotection when his produce becomes
involved in a seizure .or. bankruptcy.
Longiterm Agricultural Strategy
The federation welcomes the assertion of
the need for long-term agricultural policy as
stated by the Minister of Agriculture,
Dennis Timbrell since he took over the.
portfolio. °
Such a policy has been long overdue and.
the federation intends to help develop such a
policy. A good long-term provincial commit-
ment will certainly benefit the agricultural
community: '
But it alone cannot solve all the' problems,
observes the brief. The federal government
must also: develop, a similar plan with careful
regard given to align their strategy to match
their provincial counterparts.
