You're trudging home from school one day and
feeling a bit strange. Your coat is •heavy, your
mittens are wet,. and your boots leak.- The sky is
gray, no birds are singing, and a car splashes you
with ' slush.' You feel crummy. Not sick crummy,
just sort of crummy inside.
Just about this time of .year everyone . feels
crummy. Your parents, your friends, your teacher,
and even your dog are all suffering from the blahs.
Long sad faces loom everywhere. The whole world
is BLAH. _
Are you having fun trudging alone? No way. It's a
drag. You'd:rather have fun, right? Sure you would.
Who likes to feel crummy? 'Feeling crummy is
crummy.
But how can you perk up? It's .easy, once you
know -how. Take the corners of your mouth and lift.
them . up. ' This is ' what's comhonly known as
smiling. You'll be surprised at how 'mbch better you
feel when you smile. Try it. Did it work?
When people smile, something inside their brain l
goes, "Ah -h -h -h." 'Brains feel happy when people
smile. Why? Because when people smile they think
of : nice' things, like riding . a bike, playing tag,
sunbathing, or planting gardens. What do you think
of?
It's hard to be grumpy and feeling crummy when.
your mouth is smiling and you're thinking of nice
things: Why don't you try an experiment? Let's say
you're walking down the. street and .your feet are
cold. You're feeling pretty frustrated right? Try
being angry at your cold feet while you're smiling.
What happened? Did your frozen toes not bug you
quite as much? See how it works?.
The. next, time you're trudging down the street
with a bad case of the blahs, try smiling!!
