The October meeting of
Lucknow U.C.W. Unit 1, was
held at the home of Mrs.
Button welcomed the mem-
hers and conducted the busi-
ness.
She read a timely poem,
Thanksgiving Blessings. The,
roll call, an item from the
Observer, was answered by
14 members. -
Mrs. Vernon Hunter re-
ported on calls and cards
sent to the sick. An article
from The Mandate on Stew-
ardship and Sharing was
given by Mrs. Cliff Menary.
Mrs. Glen. Walden spoke
of the splendid display of
posters in the United Church
tent at the ploughing match.
Mrs. Gordon Morrison
asked for helpers and food
for the upcoming fowl supper
October 20.
The devotions and pro-
gram were in charge of Mrs.
Cliff Menary. Two verses of a
Thanksgiving hymn were I
sung and the scripture was
read by Mrs. Allan Gibson.
Mrs. Al Irwin led in prayer.
Mrs. Russ Button read an
• open invitation to a Quilt and
• Afghan display in Teeswater
United Church October 21.
Mrs. H. Webster gave, a
vocal number.
All enjoyed a most inter-
esting trip to Malaysia and
Singaporealong with Mrs.
Bert Alton as she recounted
her visits there. Singapore
was a British possession but
is now a Republic. Mrs.
Alton spent about nine
months visiting her daughter
and son-in-law in Sidney,
Australia and made the eight
hour air trip to Singapore in
company with another lady.
A mixup in hotel reservations
led .to the ladies spending the
first night in thebridal suite,
with many extras, such as
baskets of . fresh fruit and
orchids, as a bonus.
Both ladies' families are in
the paper recycling business
of manufacturing paper
products of playing cards,
serviettes, doilies, etc. The_
ladies were lavishly enter-
tained by the two Chinese
plant managers and thier
farnit'es who introduced
ed
andinteresting-
oriental dishes. The main
dishes were comprised of
pork, chicken, fish or sea
• food products. Every part of
• these products are used. but
are expertly cooked and
served in small portions.
The population is now •
limited to two children per
family, with severe penalties
for additional children. Sing-
apore has the third limiest
\ harbour in the world and is
changing from a nation of
importers and exporters to
one of manufacturing.
Land is at a premium so
the many new motels and
• hotels are very high risers.
Following a hymn of
Thanksgiving, Mrs. Menai
offered prayer.
