type of program), probably two in five
would actually come. Some are loners
who don't want to come out, some •
people don't like this kind of program."
There is a high success rate, though,.
if a person is given a medical referral.
When a client goes to the center,
there isn'tonly pool to play.
"We try to get away from the
traditional stereotype activities." A lot
of the clients enjoy euchre, scrabble and
crokinole but there are activities a bit
different than the usual. Most of these
concern the speakers the center brings
in, explaining everything from.'nutrition
to parts of the law dealing with older
citizens. Efforts are made to encourage
involvement in the community.
On top of that there are a variety of
crafts, a reading center and a big meal
prepared by part-time staffer 'Mary
Pollock which Rice calls, "the -highlight.
of the day".
She said that like everyone 'else,
seniors will sometimes make do with a
quick unbalanced meal rather than get
involved in all the preparations for a big
F meal.
The staff is rounded out by . Rice,.
director since August 1980, and Pam
Williams, assistant director -since Nov-
ember 1982. The three .can handle 30
clients per day.
Rice said the educational -background
required for the job is not cut and dried,
because "it's such an open field".
Backgrounds in, recreation, physical
education, social services and nursing
seem to adapt to the type of program
offered at the day center.
The center itself is in. the Wingham
Armouries which was taken over by the
town's senior citizen's club. Cadets and
Kinsmen also use. the building.
New Horizons grants helped improve
the building's interior with a number of
renovations. A ramp was ,constructed
and washroom. facilities have also been
included. The grantalso supplied the
funds for some equipment.
Rice says that although there is the
seniors' club in town, there isn't a' lot
of overlap between the two groups.
The center is funded by the provincial
government to 40 per cent from the
Ministry of Community and Social.'
Services and therefore the other 60 per
cent is raised through efforts on the part
of the staff arid the 18, member board of
directors.
User fees of $6 a day are part of the
way the funding is raised. Those .fees
can be subsidized if an individual finds
difficulty in paying them if on a 'fixed.
income, for example.
In 1985, the center also received
money from the town of Wingham,
$8,400, Huron County $8,000, and
Bruce County, $5,000. Userfees
accounted for $12,.Q06.49 of income.
These and other funding sources
together establish a budget for 1985 of
$75,603.38.
