The Lucknow Sentinel, 1985-12-11, Page 15Midgets split games this week
Although the • team split games this
week, the Lucknow Midget record stands
at a very respectable 7-2-1. This week's
action included their second loss, a 6 - 5
stinker in Shallow Lake on Dec. 6 and a
super home ice victory over Wiarton on
Dec. 9 night.
Friday night's game represents the.
worst team performance to date, hopefully'
for this year. /The Shallow Lake team
certainly provided a lot of opportunity as
they allowed a six minute power play early
in the game. The insult was that they also
scored the only goal in that time period. In
fact, Shallow Lake scored two short handed
and one power play goal enroute to a 6 - 5
lead after two periods. The Lucknow team
put their act together a bit in the third but
were unable to tie the game.
In a losing cause the line of/ Steve De
Jong, Brad Friestap and Jeff Walden
played well'and were on the ice for all five
Lucknow goals. The scoring points were:
De . Jong, 2 .assists; Forster, 1 assist;
Grazier, 1 goal; Priestap, 1 goal, 3 assists;
Vandervelde, 1 goal; Walden, 2 goals, 2
assists.
Mo'iday night's home game was one of
the.br;st to date. The Wiarton team arrived
with a .10-1 record and a reputation for
good fast . hockey. The Lucknow team
responded to the challenge by handing
them their second loss.
Scott Hackett opened the scoring about
five minutes into the game assisted by -
Steve 'Murray and Chris Irwin but Wiarton
bounced back with a fast power play
marker and tapped in two more to take a 3 -
' 1 lead. About half way through the second
Lucknow found some scoring power. Scott
Hackett scored his second unassisted and
the team sensed a change. They started to
press a little harder and Jeff Gibson tied
the ';core with anunassisted marker. Less
than a minute later Fred Flanagan deflect-
ed a pass from Gibson to give Lucknow the
Lead. In a th1rd periodcontrolled by the
home team, the only goal was scored by
Chris Irwin, an insurance marker from
Hackett preserving a 5 3 victory.
Upcoming home games include Brussels
on Dec. 15 at 3.45 and Walkerton 'B' on
Dec. 16 at 8.30.
Lancers on the road again
The Lucknow Lancers took their show on
the road for a couple of games and were
only able to manage 'a tie. The Lancers
salvaged a 6 - 6 tie with St. Clements but
the Wingham Royals doubled up on .the
locals 8 - 4.'
St. Clements jumped out to an early two
goal lead but goalsby Kevin Clarke and.
Scott Mitchell evened the score at the end
of one: St. Clements scored the only goals
in the second period for a 4 - 2 lead but the
locals scored four times in the final frame
'to end it 6 - 6. Jim' Murray, Don Elliott and;
Steve Simpson scored the' goals and Ray
Guay held off the, St. Clements attach in
the ,third for the. •
Friday night in Wingham the locals were
hardly treated to a Royal reception as both
teams parade to the penalty box..When the
parade was over, the. Lancers found them-
selves a few goals short and the Royals
went home with two points, Steve Mac-
Pherson; Grant Gilchrist, Grant Murray
and Eugene Johnston scored for Lucknow
in .a losing cause.
On Sunday night at home against the
Monkton Wildcats, the Lancers got back in 1.
the winner's circle with a 7- 3 decision over
the visitors.
Larry. MacPherson: put, the Lancers
ahead half way through the first period and
Jim` Keller, with one of his "had to see it to
believe it" goals, put the Lancers ahead 2 -
0 at the end ofone. Lucknow went ahead 4 -
2 after two periods on goals by. Steve
Simpson and Grant Murray'. Jim Murray,
Grant Gilchrist and Scott Mitchell finished
off the scoring in the third.
Two games are. slated for next weekend
as the Lancers head to Teeswater Friday
night and then come back to the comfort of
home against Milverton Sunday night.
