Peewee contact questioned
To the- Editor:
This letter is written to request the
support of your newspaper and its reader-.
ship to address a concern held by many
parents of minor hockey players. Recent
rule changes,, sanctioned by the Ontario'
Minor Hockey Association and the Canad-
ian Amateur Hockey Association have
introduced permissive body contact to the
pee wee age group. This follows an earlier
change which sanctioned a similar regres-
sive 'step for bantams.
Many parents and coaches see this as it
'regressive move. The requisites for being
an effective player seem to place brute
strength as a priority over skating skills,
stick -handling and teamwork. Wide differ-
ences in the physical size and development
of this age group also create a significant
safety hazard. When the pre -pubescent
four' footer collides with the gangling six
footer, the results are . not amusing.
As this season of minor hockey unfolds,
the . games I'm ' watching :verify growing
aggression and negative competition. It's
not "cute"; it's "sick"!
The rules should be changed. If parents
will join me and others who are voicing
similar displeasure, they will be .changed.
You •can help by urging con5erned
parents and others:
1. to contact their Minor Hockey Associa-
tion President;
2. to write their local newspaper to public.
TO
ize the concern;
3. to call their local radio call-in show;
4. to write their M.P.P.;
5. to write the OMHA President at: 1425
Bishop St.," Unit 6, Cambridge, Ontario:
NIR 6J9. -
6. to write the CAHA President at:
National Office, 333 River Road, Vanier,
• Ontario.. K1L 8H9.
7. to contact their localhockey coach about .
immediate abuses of physical aggression;
and
8. to call mein Seaforth to add their names
to a brief for submission to the OMHA.
I am convinced ;- through contacts made
during the last month - that a majority of ' •
parents want these regressive rule changes
removed. It's an error to assume that
nothing can be done. •
Let's take some positive action to initiate
some constructive change on behalf of our
children!
Sincerely,:
Paul Carroll.

. Centre. The thirteen children who went to
camp were given financial help.
Each chairman gave a summary of their
year's work. The ladies responded well to a
request from .the health unit for"quilts .for
needy families in our area, as well as
articles for the patients at Pinecrest
Manor. Each unit secretary reported their.
year's activities: Mrs. Allan Andrew of the
Young Women Can Achieve group, organ-
ized in 1984, gave a splendid report of their.
meetings, stating their membership had
grown from 14 to 35. All admired the
enthusiasm of :these young women and
wished' them continued success.
It is to. be hoped that the fine reports
given at this annual meetingwill challenge
the members to even greater things in
1986. A committee volunteered to decorate
the narthex of the church for the Christmas
season.
Rev. McDougall . complimented the
members ontheir year's work and spoke of
the importance of the UCW to the local
church, as well as to the outreach of the
church.. .
The president closed the meeting with
prayer.
