ELECTION
By James Friel
Ashfield Township council was acclaim-
ed after nominations were closed and the
five men on cduricil all look forward to the
next three yearsas representatives.
Reeve Allan Gibson, replacing retiring •
reeve John Austin, said, "There aren't any
real issues here 'as far as big projects.
:'We'll carry on with building the roads
trying to get them built up for snow plow-
ing. Once that's looked after, we'll start
hard surface treatment," said the, new
reeve.
The lakeshore erosion . is "definitely a
problem. This is. one of the „worst years
•right :now with the high water.
`The whole township is in the MVCA;
They've taken a look at it but we don't get
much out of them. It's like pulling teeth."
Gibson said there is work to be done at
Port Albert "but they (MVCA) backed out
of it again this, year."
The arena "is a. problein, no: two ways
about it. If we (the four municipalities) get
together we can iron something out."
' He believes the arena should be replaced
because fixing only the roof would be too
costly. .
"We agreed as an arena board to do, as
much as. possible without.getting tax
dollars involved. It may end p there may
be a few tax dollars involved," he said.
Grant Farrish is thedeputy-reeve for the.
next three years and he also sees the roads
as the municipality's primary concern.
"We won't do much paving in the next.,
three years,'." but he also hopes to see the
roads built up in preparation.
There are a.few problems at Port Albert
'with erosion on the north bank of the river.
The Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR)
isn't coming through. with funding."
He feels it is important to get the money
to fund the arena before the project is
actually started. "Then we should take a
look at it."
Bill. Andrew is the third experienced
council member for the next term after'.
serving his first term.
"We experimented a bit this year with
some blacktop in Port Albert," he said of.
the roads. "We'll be building up a lot of
roads, getting the base done."
He said the municipality placed the
whole of itself under .the Maitland Valley
Conservation Authority at the"strong
request of farmers". He hopes to get some
projects done, especially at • the mouth of
the river. .
"I think we're going about it in the right
way," he 'said of the arena proposal. "If
'the Lions Club wants ,to spearhead the,
fundraising, then councils will co-operate
with them." ,. •
In his own experience with building pro-
jects he said he has found it better to have
the money before starting a project and
thinks that should be done with the
complex. • '
Lee Cairncross is facing his first term on
council after receiving prodding from a
friend. •
Grant Curran went to bat for a "new
culvert at the end of the lane to replace the
old one. Most of the action was from his
manipulations on . council so when he
suggested I stand for council I • put my
name up for it." •
He said he is going to council with a lot
of ideas but "I may have my hands tied"
due to his lack of knowledge of council.
/He would like to see road improvement
done with conservation kept in mind. He
said once the side of a road is graded "it
looks nice" but. it soon washes away.
• "I'd like to see ground cover. I don't
know the economics of it though."
He also noted that the emphasis on
buildingup some. roads seems to have
affected normal maintenance of others,
particularly around his area. He stressed
he hadn't 'travelled 50 per cent of the
roads in the township but around here it
looks like more maintenance could be
done."
He feels tax dollars should be used for
the arena if the residents in the north end
using .the facility "are for it".
Paul Black is also a novice councillor, but
feels the arena "is going to be a major
problem. I don't know the particulars but
it's a good idea.' to raise the money right
now.
He feels Ashfield is well tun and has few
concerns about the roads and the erosion at
Port Albert but said he's "not sure of
what's going on in council yet."
"That sewage plant in Lucknow, I• don't
think we've seen the last of that," he said.'
' If we all sit down and .talkwe should be
able to work out a' solution."
