The Lucknow Sentinel, 1985-11-13, Page 13UCWs meet in November Unit 1 of the Lucknow UCW met in the choir room pn Nov. 5. President Mrs, Ross Shiells opened the meeting with the call to worship. The rollcall, a Bible verse concerning serenity, was answered by eight members. The business was conducted and com- mittee reports were given for social functions, supply and welfare and flowers. The fowl supper was a successthanks to everyone who helped make it possible. Mrs. Shiells closed with the thought for the day on contentment. Unit 1 joined with units 2 and 3 in the fellowship room for the worship and the excellent guest speaker. Unit 2 Unit 2 of the Lucknow UCW met on Nov. 2 at 2 p.m. in the fellowship room at the LuckInow United Church. Mrs, Walden opened • with a reading on "Peace", written by the late President John F. Kennedy. Thirteen members answered the rollcall with a Bible verse with "Peace" and its reference. The minutes were read and approved, and the correspondence was read. The offering was taken and dedicated by Mrs. Walden. Three birthdays added funds to our birthday jar. Mrs. Gordon Morrison gave the report from the fowl supper. Orders were, taken for our 1986 church calendars. Units 1 and 3 joined with Unit 2 for a joint program with ,Mrs. George McBride as the chairlady. Unit 3 The leader of Unit 3, Mrs. Charles McDonald welcomedthe members to the church parlour and read an article on the Peace of God. She commented that the. unrest in the world is caused by not recognizing God as the Prince of Peace. • The rollcall was answered 'by ' 20 members with a Bible verse on Pea'c'e. / Minutes 'of the previous meeting were given and the treasurer's report given. The. recent anniversary fowl supper was a success and, profits are a little better than last Year: Each member gave $5.00 for a special collection for the year. Happy Birthday was sung to Mrs. McDonald. The December meeting, will be held on Nov. 26 in order, to change units for the coming L year. Any one wishing to be on with a nei- ghbour should notify Mrs. Eldon Bradley. A note of thanks from Mr. and Mrs. , Clarence Irwin was read for the lovely plant given to them by the tJCW on. their. 61st anniversary. The unit joined Units 1 and 2 in the fellowship room. Thankoffering Meeting, Units 1, 2, 3 Mrs. George • McBride was in charge of ,the program and welcomed the members from the three units. • She offered prayer and the hymn "Faith of our Fathers"- was sung. The Scripture was read by Mrs. Alex Hackett and Mrs. Lorne Eadie. Mrs. McBride said all have to do a part of / Christ's work here. on earth by . working hand in hand with prayer. While we pray for a good harvest, we have to keep on hoeing. • Mrs. Eldon Bradley showed the quilts the supply committee had made and asked' for helpers to cut blocks 7 x ' 7 from used crimpelene clothes. While paper Will .be collected for recycling, no tins ,or jars will be nicked up. Following the singing of a *mil, Mrs. McBride introduced the guest speaker, Maria Dalton, a 1.7 year old student. She had been chosen to go to Haiti along with 17 other students and 10 adults during the March break. Haiti is•cbnsidered the.poorest country in the world. Their exports are coffee and sugar cane. She showed three sets of slides accompanied by lovely background music. Her, first' group was of babies and young children at an orphanage, and groups of adults taken off the streets for care. A 'person .46 years old is considered old in Haiti. Flies and bugs are everywhere and the poor have nothing. There was a beautiful home for displaced boys, built by them from a •rockpile on a mountain side: The • last lot of slides showed school children who were being educated and .fed by a' teacher-prigst, Father Bohnen,, who daily , received food from Germany for the children: He is 70. years "old has been working in Port au Prince, Haiti, for 30. years. The music Maria used as a background was "Be not afraid•I go before you". Maria told stories of the poor people's desperate struggles to escape the country, of sea captains, packing their ships with people - and charging high prices for their trips to the nearest ports in Florida. Then at night, the captains circle around and dump the people off where they boarded, minusall their possessions, or even worse, take them out to sea and throw them over board. Maria intends returning with a ,group next July to Haiti, with clothes for babies and young children. They also hope to ,make swinging hammock cribs so babies can be safe from rats. Mrs. Bradley thanked Maria and pres- ented her with a donation from the UCW for her work. A lunch and social time was enjoyed and every one was interested in the display of souvenirs from Haiti. • Unit 4 Unit 4 . of Lucknow United Church Women met for its monthly meeting on 4 Nov. 5 with an attendance of 20 members and two visitors. Mrs. Cliff Crawford presided and opened with Scripture verse. Mrs:' Bill Hunter read the Scripture. The ' meditation' was taken by Mrs. Harold. Cooke and Mrs., Hunter followed with prayer. A paper on Races of the World was given by Miss Norma Weatherhead. Mrs. Craw- ford closeddevotions with a prayer, Peace in the World. Miss Weatherhead introduced the guest speaker, Maria Dalton of Kingsbridge. She is a grade 12 student, . who was one of 25 chosen from Ontario aptplicants, to visit, Haiti during the 1985 March break. , This group was formed and run by two teachers from Mississauga and is indepen- dent of any formal organization. The group spent ten days moving over the Island, north to south and the trip entailed mostly visiting and missionary work. Maria gave an interesting presentation through slides /and accompaning music of her 10 day visit to Haiti. She then related experiences she had encountered and told of the extreme poverty facing the people and of their great need. i Maria has established her own Goder- • ich-based Haitian Experience 1986 and the group will travel, to Haiti next July. Mrs: Cooke, on 'behalf of the unit, expressed thanks to the speaker for her splendid presentation. Mrs. Bob Campbell, unit leader, conduc- ted the business, opening witha poem, The Meaning of Prayer/The rollcall was answered by, What Remembrance Means to Me. Mrs. Ken Cameron gave the' treasurer's report • and also reported for community friendship in the absence of Mrs. Bogues. Mrs. Stuart Collyer, reporting for citiz- enship and social action, read an article on Dr. Bob McClure Mrs. Gordon Cayley reported for amnesty. Mrs. Bob Finlay, reporting for stewardship of time, read a, poem, The Great Clock, and Mrs. Cliff Crawford gave a report of the turkey supper. ' St. Mary's CWL.holds rummage sale The Nov. 4 meeting of the St. Mary's. C.W.L. was attended by 10 people.'' Mrs. George Brophy, president, presided., She opened the meeting with prayers and. a Bible reading. A rummage sale will be held in the ' spring 'of 1986. Please start saving your "valuables". The C.W.L. would like to express their thanks to everyone who participated atthe annual St. Mary's Bazaar and Bake Sale.
