Thoughts from candidate
primary projects in the next three years.
"The secondary plan is going to take a
lot of time. For example, in Dungannon,.
how is the village going to be broken up
into zoning? There's going to be a lot of
chewing over that and the sooner we get it
done the better."
He feels that, "the arena isn't a major
thing, it seems to be an issue all the time,"
The candidate would also like to see the
Lucknow sewage problem settled but feels
a breather should be taken by the
principals.
"1 think it should be Zayed to fest. The
three townships and the town work
together -.and the sewageissue has raised
bad feelings. We should let it die."
Joe Hickey
Joe Dickey has been on council for 13
years and felt it was time to step up to the
deputy reeve's position if chosen to serve
another term.
He also feels the secondary plan is an
important project for the council in the next
three years. ,The farmer feels his 13 years
experience can ' help with this and other
issues facing the township.
Hickey identified the sewage plant as
another important problem to be dealt with
in the next term:
"I think• we should try .to discover a
mutually agreeable place, for the Lucknow
treatment plant if it goes. in West
Wawanosh," he said.
Gordon [Harry] Brindley
Harry Brindley spent the last term' of
office filling the council's deputy reeve's
chair. This term, however, he has offered
himself as councillor.
"To tell you the •truth; I quit," he said,
but later decided to .run, again.
He too has some reservations about the
treatment system•, particularly as both a
Township and Lucknow taxpayer.
"They should have come to the township
before they even started'. And the location
they want to put it in isn't any good.
"As a taxpayer up there I feel the plan
isn't going to do enough for Lucknow. Even
the engineers won't guarantee it beyond
five or 10 years and that's a 1ot.of money."
On the arena, he says; "If it goes, it
should' go all the way (a new building.
rather than renovations): They should have
done it years ago."
He says one of the best attributes he can
bring to the job is his disputing 'something
if he feels it's wrong.
"I'm committed to the taxpayer. If I'm
put in there by the taxpayer, I'm going to
make sure the best thing is done."
Harold Menary
I've always been interested in municipal
politics and ' I just decided t is was the
time," said Harold Menary of ' is decision
to run for council.
"There aren't any real big issues, it's
just .a mater of housekeeping," he said.
Menary pointed out that where he farms a,t
the south end of the township, the problem
with the arena isn't as high profile.
"When we look at arenas in this end of
the township, we look at Blyth or Goder-
ich,." He also doted that he hadn't seen any
estimates on the cost of replacing or
renovating the old structure. •
Menary also noted that he was "surpris-
ed" the Maitland Valley Conservation
Authority (MVCA),, had approved the
sewage treatment plant for a spot so close
to the river..He feels it's "pretty obvious it
would go "to the river. It looks like a bad
idea to'me."
"We have as reasonable taxes as you
can get in this part of the country and I'd
like to be a part of that," said the farmer.
He said his time spent as director of the
Holstein-Fresian Association could be an
asset if he was elected . as. councillor.
Cecil Cranston
"I thought about it earlier, but I have a,.
couple other irons in the fire," said Cecil
Cranston on being a candidate for council.
"I thought 1 wouldn't but when the dead-
line
rolled around and there was no interest
it kinda bothered me so I. thought I'd throw
my hat in." • •
He noted his wife, Marybelle Cranston,
had .served 'on council for "around eight
years" and "It kinds grows on you."
"It's• got to go someplace, that's for
'sure," he said of the sewage plant. "I •
know people don't like something like that
in their backyards."
He also thinks that seepage of some kind
would occur at the approved location. '
He has. "mixed' feelings" about the
arena. He wondered about Ministry of •
Transport , and Communications (MTC)
approval and about the age of the ice plant.
- "It's like buying a new Cadillac and
going to a junkyard for radio," he said of
buildinga new arena over a decrepit ice
plant.
There are two positions open: for
councillor as Rhea Hamilton -Seeger was
acclaimed to another term as the only
candidate registered when nominations
closed on Oct. 21.. .The ''other three
candidates registered Oct. 23.
