Lucknow affected
by age changes
By Bill Hunter
Changes in age restrictions in the hockey
system have changed the minor hockey
system in this country and L-ucknow is no
exception.
With players getting an extra year of
hockey in the sante category they played in
the previous year, it leaves the Lucknow
minor hockey system with an overload at
the bottom end with the older players
staying and new players joining,
That forces the Lucknow minor system to
add a novice division to the travelling
teams and at the same time the age change
takes a number of juvenile aged players
and keeps them from advancing. However,
the increase in. enrollment his enabled the
system to add two or three teams in the.
tyke and novice divisions, two atom teams, •
two peewee. teams, and one bantam team
and one more midget team.
• The introduction of Canskate in the past
years has made a visible improvement in
hockey quality. Those without prior skating
instruction ' are usually far • behind their
teammates. Therefore enrollment in Can -
skate is very important for development.
• A 'new member of the refereeing staff
has been added. Tommy Gilmore,' who has •
refereed house league and B teams for
years has attended clinics to obtain his
refereeing levels one 'and two.
'Refereeing is a thankless job and it is
hard to involve more people in •this area
because of the harassment they're subject
to. But perhaps it should be realized that
these refs are local people filling a very
important position : in the ' minor hockey
system. Without refs, there .would 'be no •
game. • . .
Criticizing a referee's 'call is,, common-
' place but rarely has to do with the outcome
. of a game. As a hockey player makes 10
times more mistakes thana referee, •it is •
understandable that the play of actually
determines the outcome of the game. .
The game should lie played the way'• in
which it was meant: to mold character and
for sportsmanship and fellowship: •
