Milvena Erickson has =Wed to Lucknow from Bayfield and opened Bulk Food Connection
on the nudn street in the village. The new business offers a variety of goods by Intik and
Milvena hopes to add more Items to her present stock. ' • [James Friel photo]
Dream is realized
By Jai:lea Friel
After years of working for other
people in the Bayfield area, Milvena
Erickson decided to take the step to go
into business for herself. She quit her
job at Harbor Lights Restaurant in Bay-
field, and after contacting Barry Mc-
Donagh about a building in Lucknow,
moved here to start Bulk Food Connec-
tion at 558 Campbell Street.
Milvena worked at the Albion Hotel
on the main street of the village of
Bayfield for, over seven years and
became friends with her boss. After he
sold the hotel, • he decided he'd
investigate other properties and one of
those was Fluffy's Burger Bar. Milvena
thought she'd take a look at, the area
and talked to' real estate agent Barry
McDonagh about a place she could open
a business. • After a few months of
searching,. he told her of the building
next to Finlay Decorators and once she
looked the • property over, • Milvena
bought it as a likely location for. her
store.
"The idea for the store was conceived
about two or three years ago but. 1
couldn't find a spot I liked," she explai-
ned of the long road to actually opening
the store.
Milvena did the work to convert the
large, front room and foyer into a space
for her store. "It wouldn't be too hard to
increase the space if I need more
room," shd said.
She opened the More Oct. 26 with the
basic bulk food items. "1 got a lot of nice
suggestions on opening day from people
saying what' they would like to see
here,' ' and consequently, the next order
BUSINESS..,.
she receives will contain some of the
items requested. "I'd like pe,ple to tell
me what they want me to car -v."
A little more than just the Construc-
tion had to be done. The contruction
itself might have been a little more
challenging than the time-consuming,
repetitive and jut plain boring job of •
bagging all the pri ct.
"I spent hours lours ,bagging
stuff," said M"ve )11ing her eyes
and laughing a, ,nc 'ory. In f' ct, it
was two-thi- Mon( ,norning before
she was f hed. It ,Ined a great id-
ea, saviiic, ate spice agging until last
becausr f supposeo,y convenient pour
• spout., ,n the balk containers, but it did-
n't quite come off the way she planned
it. The upshot of the idea is that she
spooned spices into bags for a long,
• long time.
'She stressed that the product sizes on,
the shelves around the, single room
enterprize aren't the only available. The
new Lucknow resident said she will
produce the amount of product 'needed
by a customer.
"I find the people very friendly," she
•enthused of the community's residents.
"Everyone's been just great. I was
amazed on Monday when all these
flowers arrived, and when all these
peoPle showed up saying they'd be
,buying here." •
