"This is a time to celebrate the heritage of ..our public library system in Ontario", says the Honourable Lily Munro, Minister of Citizenship and Culture. "And it's a time for all Ontarians to rediscover the joy and excitement that public libraries bring to: all communities." The theme for this year's celebrations is "Let Yourself Go," and the happenings and events planned for Public Library Week are encouraging citizens to, do just that. Puppet shows and special programs for children, poetry and prose readings, con- certs, demonstrations, displays and storytellers will highlight the week's festivities: "Enthusiastic library staff, volunteers and trustees will be making every effort to give the, public a sampling of all that is available. Everything from closed - captioned video disks, to films in Chinese, to books written in Cree, to French - language records will be showcased dur-•. ing Ontario Public Library Week," Dr. Munro said. "This celebration provides a unique opportunity for people in com- munities across Ontario to experience their local library's many varied and useful services first-hand." • The ministry is sponsoring two library - oriented conferences as a prelude to On- tario Public Library Week: Libraries -2000, a futures . symposium, will examine how library services will develop to meet future needs; and, Youthtalk '85 will ex- amine the special needs of library services to youth. "Both , conferences provide a positive. forum for exchanging ideas and for ensur- ing that our library services of tomorrow are tailored to meet the ever-changing needs of society," Ms. Munro said. want to invite all Ontarians toget out and visit their local libraries to sample the wealth of information and the variety of programs available there.
