Lucknow fairfeatures baking contest
In this age of high-tech and fast food, a
gift of good home baking is perceived, more
than ever as a gift of love.
Not surprisingly then, the theme for
Robin Hood's baking competitions at this
year's Canadian fairs and exhibitions -is
"With love from your kitchen", and more
than 30f fairs are expected to participate in
the contests, including the Lucknow Fall
Fair, September 20, 21.

Focusing on creative packaging of
favourite cookie or bar recipes, the Adult
Class competition is called "Celebrity"
Cookie Jar Contest Each fair will' select a
local celebrity who will act as judge and

Lightening fire
The Lucknow and District Fire lie-
partment was called to a blaze at the
home of Al Wraight .and family on.
Stauffer Street, Lucknow, on August 18.
Fire Chief Bud Hamilton stated that
the fire was caused by lightening during,
the storm on the morning of August 18.
The department answered the call at
about 10.15and spent three hours
battling the fire.
Hamilton estimated the fire caused
$25,000 damage to the house which he
said was insured.

Herb and Marie Wilkins visited relatives
in Sudbury on the weekend.
Congratulations to Heather Blake and
Colin Snyderwho were married in Dungan-
non on August 17. Also to Bob and Diane
Phillips who were married in Lucknow on
August. 10. • •
Harvey and Betty Ritchie visited her
sister, Elva ' and Bert Wylie in Clifford on
August 18. •
Visiting with June and Pete Bremner are-

retheir daughter Patricia Sims, Carolyn and
Lisa of Ottawa.
John Bremner of Toronto recently spent
two week's holidays with his parents.
Lucknow mites
win consolation
. Lucknow' lost ; their first ' game of . the
tournament 4 - 1 against Paisley. Clint
Murray pitched a great game as he never
allowed a hit,'but two errors and two walks
were all Paisley needed as all their base
runners scored. Keith Todd had two hits.
for Lucknow while Clint Murray had one
and Steve Porter scored Lucknow's run.
In the second game .Lucknow defeated
Tiverton 5 - 4. Keith Todd pitched a, great
game and Clint Murray came into get the
last two batters with the tying run an
second base: Chad Stanley had two hits;
Clint Murray, Keith Todd and Steve Porter
had one each., •
In the third game Lucknow lost 3 - 1. to
Paisley. Lucknow had hits from Clint
Murray, Steve Porter, Keith Todd and Joel
Sutton but couldn't score /enough runs to
win. Lucknow then played Cargill fot`. the
'consolation trophy and defeated them 24
4. Chad Stanley, Steve Porter and Keith
Todd all homered for Lucknow. Clint
Murray, Joel Sutton and Dean Tiffin also
had hits.
Lucknow now plays in' the W.O.A.A.
grand championship tournament August
23, 24 and 25. Their first game is August 23
inNeustadtt?against Chepstow. ,
towards whom local entries will be direct-
ed. The contest will be a terrific oppor-
tunity to bake for an, admired er respected
personality .whose , hobbies, • likes and '
interests are well known 'to local partici-
pants.
The Intermediate Division is for younger
cooks, aged 13 to 17 yearsinclusive, and
features a "Cookie Jar" . contest for a
favourite person, to be determined by each
baker. Since it's particularly satisfying to
bake for a special someone -- whether it's a
parent, teacher or rock star -- these gifts
really do come baked with love.
• Baking contest entries will be judged 60.
per cent on content -- appearance, taste
and texture of the cookies or bars, and 40
per. cent on presentation -- creative use of
materials, labelling, and overall . eye
appeal. All entries, of course, must be
accompanied by a guarantee panel from
any size package of any Robin Hood flour
product. First, second .and third place
prizes will be awarded in . each category,
and a special prize of $100 will go to the 30
fairs who turn in the most entries in the
Adult class.
Young bakers can also participate in the
competitions in a special "Family Birthday
Cookiegram" class. Judging. the prizes for
this category is the same as the other two
contests.
Recipes from first place winners in each
of thethree classes will be considered for
inclusion in ,a prize winning recipe book
now being compiled by Robin Hood and the
Canadian Association of Exhibitions.
