There were a total of 16 entries .for
four heats. • -

attendance to help keep down the
dust and a standby in a case _ of
emergency.
Ray Dalton celebrates 80th birthday
Ray Dalton, son of Morgan Dalton and
Marg Sullivan of Kingsbridge, was born on
the seventh concession, Ashfield,one of a
family of eleven children. He spent his life
farming.He married Patricia .Reynolds of
New .Liskeard, Ontario on October 15,
1938. She predeceased him in December
1967. The family consists of Mike, Terry,
Dan, Kathleen McDonald and Cletus. •
Approximately two hundred and fifty of
Ray's relatives, neighbours and friends •
travelled to Fergus on July 13 to join in
the celebration of his 80th birthday: By bus
and' by car dozens of neighbours and
friends from Ashfield, Goderich and
Lucknow motored to the small Scottish
town to attend the big Irish party. Relatives•
by the • score from northern and southern
- Ontario gathered together for the gala
'occasion and reunited with their cousins.
and friends from points as distant as New
Brunswick, British Columbia, Michigan,
Pennsylvania, . -New York, Florida, Texas
and California.
• Mass was celebrated at St. Joseph's
Church by Father Michael J. Dalton
M. B, E. of Elierland. This jovial congrega-
tion assembled at the Fergus Legion for a ,
group photo and sit down dinner.
After / an. excellent, meal which was
served the. Fergus Legion auxiliary,
several representatives of, the community
and relatives addressed the guest of
honour in the manner of a Dean Martin
roast! There was some congenial teasing
and plenty of old fashioned wit,. poetry and
song. All ,participants recognized and paid:
tribute to Ray for his singing, his church
and community involvement and his fel-
lowship over the years.
The remainder of the evening was ,
permeated with the sound of gaiety, under
the leadership of that 'young at heart' Irish
tenor. •All those assembled joined together •
' in laughter, in dance and in -song. By all
accords, it was a birthday party to
.remember.
Fairish family has 24th reunion
The 24th annual Farrish family reunion
was held under sunny skies on Sunday,
August 4.at the home of Jack and Mary Far-
rish, Ashfield Township. ;bout 40 people
were in attendance. • , •

Races and games were held in the after-
noobwith winners as follows: Kim Farrish,
girls' 9-12 race; Chris Farrish, boys' 9-12
race; Randi Farrish, girls'. four and under
race; Courtney Dignan, boys' four and
under race; Joelene Shelton, skip rope
Angie Farrish, ladies' kick the slipper; and
Bradley Farrish, men's kick the slipper.
The person travelling the furthest
distance to the picnic was Alex Adams of
Toronto; the youngest baby present was
Dustin James Farrish, week old son of
Wayne and Mary Jo Farrish; the eldest lady
present was Hilda Farrish; and the eldest
man present was Lloyd McDougall. The per-
son with the most buttons was Darlene
Shelton and the person with the birth date
closest to the picnic was Wes Dignan.
The races and games were followed by a
sucker scramble for the children and a
business meeting for the adults. A minute's
silence was held for the late Bob and Dave'
MacLeod.
President Jim Farrish conducted the elec-
tion Of
lec-tion'Of officers for next year. Jasper Farrish
was elected president; Don . Farrish was
elected secretary -treasurer; and Betty and
Dale Farrish will look after the games and
prizes.
It was decided to hold next year'sreunion,
at the picnic pavillion at the end of the 12th
concession in Ashfield Township on the first
Sunday in August again. There was some
discussion about, the recent drop in atter
dance at the reunion and it was decided that
the head of each family should phone his or
her family members prior to next • year's
reunion to remind them of the date.
After the business, a delicious
smorgasbord supper was enjoyed. The reu-
nion wrapped up with a game of baseball.
