Rhodys give presentation
Monday evening was a most 'enjoyable
one as families gathered at the Anglican
Church . along . with folks from Ripley,
Lucknow and the Kinlough :Presbyterian
friends to enjoy a slide presentation on
Africa shown by David Rhody and his wife
Marilee, who was dressed' in African dress
and their two children. Kazin and Kalua.
.For some it was the first time they had
met .. Marilee and the children. David,,
eldest son of Mr: and, Mrs. Gerald Rhody,
grew up on concession 10 where his sister
Marilyn and her husband Dennis Brace
and Travers now live.
David's .narration was perfect. He gave
us , so much to think about concerning
Africa: His/ work in. Africa was with
C.A.R.E., overseeing the digging/of wells
so that the native people will have pure,
clean water to drink: It was fascinating to
seethe women coming to filltheir pitchers
and carry water in them. home on their
head.- Marilee teaches school and her class
rooms are so different than we see in our
part . of the country.
Some of ushad never seen a river boat or
cattle crossing a river. The herdsmen are
'so well trained that all crossesare made
safely. The Rhody home looked quite
invitingalthough several places of living
accommodation were not as nice. Their
mosques were many and similar in design.
The sunrise and sunset were a delight to
see and David, being a lover of nature, had
many slides of roadside beauty. The roads
are not like our black top; The ferry to cross
the river would hold three'small cars like
theirs. Marilee took a.picture of David and
the children on the ferry. 'The ferry was
powered with men walking in the water
with their long poles to push the ferry to its
landing (like having a bath with .your
clothes on).
' It. was also nice to see Marilee's parents
Reverend and Mrs. Marvin Keislar and.
also her brother and aunt who visited
them. They picnicked outdoors• and enjoy-
ed the African sunshine, as well as the
warm hospitality which they received at the
Rhody home there. This is just a fraction of
what I can remember from the many
interesting slides. •
Marilee showed several articles made by
the African women and men.
Mrs. Delbert Hedley came forward to •
present a gift in appreciation and a
hearty applause expressed thanks from
everyone. It hadn't been planned to take
up an offering, but it was the general
feeling that we wanted to share in David's
project. Everyone was most generous and
both David and Marilee expressed their
thanks and said they did appreciate being
able to .show their pictures. and enjoy an
evening of fellowship together. The church
ladies served a nice lunch and enjoyed the
visit together. Rev. Merelyn Letson asked
the blessing before we had refreshments.
\W We wish David, Marilee and the children
a bice holiday here and safe journey back.
They also had visited in California with
Marilee's parents before coming here.
