D champ's in April 1985
EDITOR'S NOTE: The Ripley. Midgets'
hockey team proved 'that the village and
Huron Township was indeed alive in 1985
when they captured the All -Ontario 'D'
championship in April. One of the village's
highlights leading up to the August reunion,
sports reporter Steve McAllister wrote this
story on the Midget's victory for the April 17
edition of The News.
Residents in Ripley have proclaimed their
village is "Alive in '85" and the celebration
has gotten off to a rather early start. Ripley
can thank their midget hockey team for
that.
The Ripley Midgets are the 1985 All -
Ontario `•D' champions after doubling
Thornton 8-4 in Barrie Saturday night to, win
the best -of -seven final series in six games.
The provincial title is Ripley's first in 'D'
play and this community's first Ontario
championship since the .1975-76 season when
the midgets captured the `E' crown. Ripley
also claimed a juvenile championship. in
1971-72. •
The 1985; winning coaches, Barry .Mac-
Donald and Robert Regier were a, part f
that 1975-76 club, Regier playing and Mac-
Donald serving as an assistant coach under
Lynn Armstrong. MacDonald played on the
1971 juvenile team and he said Monday
afternoon a provincial title brings a great
feeling when you're on the ice or behind the
bench.
"It's pretty exciting both ways. I guess
(as a player) you notice the effort that's put
into it. It's gratifying to see the team you
took at the first of the year and see the
playersdevelop as the season goes on," said
MacDonald.
It was a great weekend for teams in the
Western Ontario Athletic Association.
Teeswater Pee Wees skated past Godfrey
(from the Kingston area) 5-3 Sunday after-
noon on home ice to win their second Ontario
`DD' championship in three years. Mount
Forest , Midgets beat Napanee Saturday
night at home for top provincial° honors at
the 'B' level. Listowel.. Juveniles defeated
Napanee for 'the All -Ontario 'B' title on
Easter weekend and Seaforth Midgets lost
to Bracebridge on the weekend in the 'C'
finals.
Saturday's win also provided Ripley with
their second championship in three days..
The Huron Township villagers edged
Brussels 4-3 in overtime on home ice
Thursday night to clinch the WOAA 'D'
championship for the second straight year.
Ripley beat . Brussels last year in the fifth
and final game, and again' this season a
deciding game was needed in the best -of -
three series. The pair of championships sur-
prised MacDonald to some degree.
"I thought we had .a solid `club this year
but I didn't know how competitive we would
be," said MacDonald, adding residents. in
the village may have been a little quieter
this year after making a lot of noise in 1983-
84 that the, midgets would win the All-.
Ontario title. That club was 'upset by Tiver-
ton in a WOAA playoff series.
Cook, Twolan and Gamble paced the win-
ners
A pair of first-year midgets led Ripley of-
fensively Saturday night. Darrell' Cook not-
ched a hat trick, including the winning goal
seven minutes into the secondpertod. Clint
