Langside country and western
hoedown fun for whole family
Foot stomping fun was the order of the
day for , those who showed up at the
inaugural Country and. Western Hoedown
at the old Langside school last. Sunday.
Approximately 25 .country musicians
• from bands all over southwestern Ontario
contributed some fine music for.•the good
crowd that turned out.•
Allan Miller, . organizer of the event
who's also a country musician, planned the
event in order to "let people have an.
afternoon of, fun".
'He said the majority of the musicians
that contributed their talents were friends
and acquaintances who he .had met while
playing in bands. I phoned them up and
they said ' `sure, we'd love • to do it'," he
said.
Some of the musicians who took part
were Richard Huber, Ron McWaters, Ken
Schaefer, Gerard (Charlie) Moyer, Marg-
aret' Harkness, Wally Wood, Linda Smith,
Cordon Ross, Gordon Brown, Pat Mc -
Ninth, Lorraine Barry, Elmer Self, the
Ranger brothers, Alan Rivett and- Allan
Miller himself.
Mr. •Miller said he, would like to thank
everyone who contributed to the event to
make it such a success: He said there are
plans for a similar event in the future.

got to meet and interview some of . the
world's most prominent people. On the list
of. VIPs . is former . Chilian President
Salvador Allende, PLO leader Yasser Arm
rafat, Nazi fugitive Claus Barbi as well as
Pierre Trudeau and Brian' Mulroney: How-
ever, he finds that the most worthwhile
people to interview are common people
with common problems. .
"I still think the most interesting people
to talk to are ordinary people who've got
something that they want to express," he
said.
"I've interviewed Pierre Trudeau and a
lot of these guys are pretentious. I often
think it's a waste of time because you
don't know if they're telling the truth. You
can always count on ordinary people to give
you the straight goods."
In August, Reed will start to film and do
interviews for the next season of W5. His
first assignment will be a story on King
Hussein, the King of. Jordan. Reed sees
him as the symbol of the real problem' in
the Middle East. He's pro -western, yet
he's a Moslem. Half of Jordan is occupied
by the Israelis yet he still has sympathy
towards'the Palestinians. In addition, he's
also a pilot and likes to drive fast cars and
is one of the last Kings in the world.
Also next season, Fteed hopes to do a
story to explain to' Canadians what Islamic
it all about. He will be travelling to Egypt
to interview Lslainie judge -Qui-is an ex-
pert in Islamic law and the Koran, the
Islamic bible:
"Canadians keep hearing Stories about
Shiites, and Moslems and nobody really
knows what it's about," says Reed, who is
W5's resident expert on the Middle East.
Terrorism
He says most Canadians have Dome to
believe that the Islamic religion is com-
pletely engulfed with terrorist activities
and has no regard for human life.. What
few people understand is that Shiites, who
were responsible for the American hostage
taking. in Beirut,. are a small extremist
group within a larger .group. ' "In reality,
the Moslems are some of • the nicest,
hospitable people; I've ever met.
Away from the show, Reed likes to relax
by gardening and reading books. He has no
television in his cottage and rarely buys a
daily newspaper through the summer.
months. This past winter,; he and his sons
took up skiing and he finds the slopes to his
liking.
He enjoys his work. With the CT\ .show
and says it is one of the better netWorks to
work for. He, plans on staying. with W5 for a
few more years before deciding to retire.
Ile was recently offered a job with•1CBU's
,The Journal, but turned it down.
"It's a great job. I love it," he says,
