NIGHTS TILL 9 p.m. CARD ACCEPTED Legion dispute continues TQ To the Editor:, In my letter last week (July 14th) I disputed the way the Lucknow Legion Branch had made their selection for . the Canadian Legion Diamond Juliee 60th Anniversary 1Vtedals. President Leonard Clark says the selec- tion process is handed down from the Dominion and Zone Command levels. He (Clark) says .the system of selection is "rigid", based on the number of functions and meetings attended, also on the members work within the last two years - saying that is why a number of older veterans didn't qualify. If the rules on the system are so "rigid", why. are they so "flexible", that a neigh- bouring Legion Branch is selecting Legion Members with not less than 10 years membership in the branch. Needless 'to say, they have no associate members included in . their list of Jubilee Medal recipients. So it seems, it : was the local Legion ' Branch Honours and Awards committee. and Branch )cecutive, that made their own interpretation of the "Flexible", "Rigid" rules. I understood when I handed in my letter, for the "Sentinel" 10th July issue, it would be printed then, and if anyone wished to comment on it, they could write in at a later date. However, the . Sentinel decided to hold it back until the 17th of July, so as to get in touch with Mr. Clark, and print his comments alongside mine. In regards to 'my being eligible for a Diamond Jubilee Medal, I would never be considered, as I attend very few meetings, and social functions even less, but rain, war veteran, and Legion member. I do think there are some veterans in the branch who should have been considered as they did. work •over the other 38 years' and "served their, branch so well". • In our age group, veterans who fought in the war over 40' years ago, shouldn't be expected to be at "Functions" or doing too much work, especially in the last two years. I feel they have already done their part, to build up their Legion Branch - they are the .ones, that.shouldihave been honoured. Jim McNaughton, Luclmow.
