Aniiration and respect for teachers' guidance'
• By Laurie Hayden
Valedictory Speech -1985
As valedictorian of the class of '85, I
welcome you to our graduation ceremgnies.
Mr. Tremeer, teachers, guests, and fellow
grads: after nine extremely long years of
public school, we all heave ' a sigh of relief,.
but not so deep as to calm our nervous .an-
ticipation of high school. Our teachers will
likely (but I hope not) be most exuberant to
see us leave..
We won't likely ever forget Mr. Hooftman„
with his "no muck muck" and his very
thorough teaching of French. Mr. Cameron,
with his instruction of math, art; more
math, and his concert productions will be
unforgetable. Mr. Hazlitt's tests and
assignments have been very beneficial ' to
us. Mrs. Graham, also , known as
Brookside's mom, has been very helpful as
a coach in all sports and has always been
there when we needed her. We won't forget
camping ,at. Menesetung . and picking pine
cones with Mr. Liddle. We also have plea-
sant.meinories of our primaryy teachers who
guided us from helpless little individuals
whocouldn't tie shoes or zip zippers to less
helplesspeople who could read and write.
Last,: but not, least; . Mr. Tremeer, since
becoming principal and general manager
last year,' has been very involved with our
• school curriculum.
Actually, , I want to say we admire and
• respect these 'people for •guiding us to this
stage in our lives: Their determination and
efforts have been greatly appreciated by the
graduating class even though it..•may not
have seemed so at times.
As , well as the teachers, we know our
years at school have been made easier by
others such. as Mrs. Blake, our librarian,
and our caretakers, Mr. and Mrs. Wilkins,.
who keep our school and surroundings in top
shape. I really wonder if Brookside School
could function without Mr. Blake, who is
secretary, bus driver, nurse, and assistant
manager:. : '
We must also give thanks to our parents
for standing behind us with praise and ung
ing us to do our best. Without. their en-
couragement, understanding and support, I
wonder if we would be graduating tonight?,
When looking back on our years at
Brookdide,.we will be sure to remember best
our friends. They sure helped out in many
situations. If it weren't for • friends -. who
would `lend you their notebook when ,you
didn't . have your ,homework done? ' Who

would whisper the answer to you when the
teacher asked a question and you were off -
who knows where! To whom would you, ad-
mit the ,mark'of your last French test?
To some of our, friends it is au revoir as we
head for two different high schools.
Although we'll make new friends, we won't
forget our old.ones.from Brookside School!
According to Webster's dictionary,
"valedictory" means "saying good-bye" so
tonight our class bids farewell to Brookside
Withits many memories and experiences
which have made us the mature teens you '
see tonight.
Fellow graduates, as we go on to the next
stage in our lives, I'd like to leave .you with
this thought. There are three kinds of people
in the world: - those who make things hap-
pen, those :who watch what happens, and
those who wonder what happened: It is peo-
ple 'who make things happen who get the
most out of .life: As someone once said, "A
ship in a harbour issafe, but that is not what
ships are built for." Good-bye and good
luck!
