(Photo by Alan Rivett) Host English exchange student By Alan Rivett Most exchange trips for young people to foreign countries offer a chance to ex- perience a different land and people with a different culture. For Robert Harris, it's all these things along with some agricultural knowledge he can take back to his native England. Robert, 21, who lives on a farm in South Devon, England, is involved in a nine week summer exchange With the Junior Farmers' Clubs of Ontario. He belongs to the National Federation of young Farmers' Clubs and is representing 55,000 members in England and Wales. He's been with the club for eight years. "I first had to prove to my sponsors that I could learn something useful over here, said Robert of . becoming involved in the ex- change. "Part of becoming accepted for the exchange was preparing a project.. My pro- ject was beef production in Ontario and comparing it to home." He is currently spending a week with • Junior Farmer member Sharon Alton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ken Alton of Ashfield observing their dairy operation. Sharon said she received an opportunity to participate in the exchange after apply- ing to area zone of the Junior Farmers which takes in Huron, Bruce and Grey Coun- ties. After it was discovered that Robert had requested a large dairy operation for the ex- change, .Sharon was offered the chance to host him. Hedge fences Robert, who will be in Ontario until August 10 before going on a vacation to Calgary and British Columbia. He said there are a number of differences between Canadian and English farms. The fences in England are all made from hedges and do not use barbed wire or electric fences. "I'm surprised by the small size of the dairy farms here. They're a lot less than in our country.
