Most exchange trips for young people to
foreign countries offer a chance to ex-
perience a different land and people with a
different culture. For Robert Harris, it's all
these things along with some agricultural
knowledge he can take back to his native
England.
Robert, 21, who lives on a farm in South
Devon, England, is involved in a nine week
summer exchange With the Junior Farmers'
Clubs of Ontario. He belongs to the National
Federation of young Farmers' Clubs and is
representing 55,000 members in England
and Wales. He's been with the club for eight
years.
"I first had to prove to my sponsors that I
could learn something useful over here, said
Robert of . becoming involved in the ex-
change. "Part of becoming accepted for the
exchange was preparing a project.. My pro-
ject was beef production in Ontario and
comparing it to home."
He is currently spending a week with
• Junior Farmer member Sharon Alton,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ken Alton of
Ashfield observing their dairy operation.
Sharon said she received an opportunity
to participate in the exchange after apply-
ing to area zone of the Junior Farmers
which takes in Huron, Bruce and Grey Coun-
ties.
After it was discovered that Robert had
requested a large dairy operation for the ex-
change, .Sharon was offered the chance to
host him.
Hedge fences
Robert, who will be in Ontario until
August 10 before going on a vacation to
Calgary and British Columbia. He said
there are a number of differences between
Canadian and English farms. The fences in
England are all made from hedges and do
not use barbed wire or electric fences.
"I'm surprised by the small size of the
dairy farms here. They're a lot less than in
our country. I'm also "surprised at the high
