Mr. Goner's term in Ludmow is part of the internship program from Westminster Theological Seminar in Escondito, California. (Photo by Alan Rivett) Lucknow Christian Reformed Church welcomes student pastor By Alan Rivett After a year without a permanent pastor, the congregation of the Lucknow Christian Reformed Church was glad to see the arrival of a temporary pastor to fill the void at the church. Rod' Gorter, a Divinity student at the 'Westminster Theological Seminar in Es- condito, California, will serve as the church's pastor through the . summer months. The pastoral charge at the Christian Reformed Church is part of Mr. Goiter's internship program at the college which lasts 10 to 12 Weeks. He lead attended the seminary for two years. He arrived in Lucknow June 1 from California and, the following. Sunday, preached at the morning service. In addi- tion, he also preached at the evening service of the Blvth Christian Reformed Church. Mr. Gorter was pleased with his reception from the people of the Lucknow congregation. "I felt good about it," says Mr. Gorter about his first Sunday as Pastor. "I felt really welcome here. They're a really warm congregation." He says he is totally at home in Lucknow as he was originally from the town of Edgerton, Minnesota, a town of the same size as L cknow. "It's like going home, only it's Canada, not the U.S.," he says. He says California life, however, is a sharp contrast to living here as it is a "hectic, fast -paced life".. The internship in Ludmow was arranged through the Calvin' Seminary for the Christian Reformed Church in Michigan. He says One of the primary reasons he SPECIAL requested the Ludmow church was be- cause his wife Lydia (nee. Schuurman) was originally from Clinton and it would give therria chance to visit with her parents for. the summer. His wife is still teaching at, a school in southern California, but will be moving to the Lucknow area by the end of June. His duties within the church over the next three months are to preach every Sunday and to visit the sick and shut-ins. Other responsibilities he will encounter are teaching at the Vacation Bible School at the church and counselling members of the congregation. As part of the • internship, he was responsible for establishing goals for himself and the church. His primary goal, he says, is to grow closer to the Lord through his work in Lucknow. Secondly he hopes to serve the needs of the congrega- tion as well as gaining experience from his work. After finishing his internship in Luck - now, he says he will return to the seminary in California foo another year of school after which, he will have attained his Master of Divinity degree. He also plans to spend another year studying Divinityat the Calvin Seminary in Grand Rapids, Michi- gan. After that, he and his wife will seek a ministry. They are considering a foreign or specialized ministry in the future. Amateur hockey decision... from page organize the softball programs. Anyone interested in lending a hand should contact the recreation office. • The swimming registration has been going well and the pool should be open by the Summerfest weekend of June 22 and 23, weather permitting. The roller skating program is still tentative at this time. This is due to a leaky arena roof. After a rain it usually takes several days for water to dry from the arena floor which makes roller skating impossible.
