Petition supports secretaries
By Sharon Dietz
A petition of 1,080 names gathered over
a 24 hour period, supporting the secret-
aries and clerical staff on strike against the
Bruce County Board of Education, was
tendered to the board at its May 7 meeting
moments before the secretaries walked off
the job. Trustee Frank Eagleson, repres-
enting Port Elgin, Southampton and the
Township of Saugeen, presented the
petition which urged the board -to return to
the negotiating table.
The board passed a motion in support of
its negotiating committee's offer of 12 per
cent phased in over two years shortly after
Eagleson tendered the petition. Eagleson
and Mary Chatterton, also representing
Southampton, Port Elgin and Saugeen
Township, voted against the motion.
Eagleson said he, does not agree with the
board's position not to offer the secretaries
and clerical staff parity with the custodians
and executive secretaries. He asked
negotiating committee chairman- Alvin
Thompson, . if a workable solution could be
found if the board offered the secretaries
16 per cent over two years or parity with
the custodians.
Thompson, who is the Kincardine
trustee onthe board, said he felt the
board's offer was fair with today's job
market and the economy today.
"If you look at other boards there is a
differential between executive and school
secretaries,' said Thompson.
"We have inherited a problem; perhaps
ive now should rectify the situation," said
Eagleson.
W alkerton trustee Roy W eiler comment-
ed the union arm board negotiating
committee had reached a. settlement. The
union subsequently voted not to ratify the
agreement.
"I don't think they (the seci$"`taries)
know what they want. They keep changing
their minds."
, When Eagleson tendered the petition to
the board, trustee Thompson remarked he
had taken two days from spring seeding for
which he does not get paid.
"I negotiated as fairly as possible and I
didn't see you there," said Thompson.
referring to Eagleson. Thompson went on
to voice his objection to Eagleson present-
ing a petition to the board and Eagleson.
apologized, saying he had been asked to
bring the petition to the board. '
