BOOK EARLY - AVOID DISAPPOINTMENT
Sow red clover early in Spring
Winter wheat has been the most popular crop for
underseeding in Essex County and red lover has
proven to be the best plowdown species to date. In
trials in Ontario double cut red clover has generally out
performed single cut by providing more growth and
more nitrogen.
The earlier in the spring the red clover is applied to
the wheat the, -,better are the chances of success. The
aim is to have the seed on and ready to sprout as the
wheat greens and begins to grow. Delaying the seeding
until the wheat is grog reduces the chance of
establishment because o competition with the wheat
crop. In Essex county a number of custom operators
have all terrain vehicles with seeders attached to apply
red clover to wheat fields.
A wheat crop that does not lodge, is °harvested in
good tithe and has the straw removed promptly
contributes to a strong clover stand. Adequate rainfall
after wheat harvest encourages rapid and'good growth
of the clover giving a better plowdown crop.
