Peterson was also critical of the U.S. farm policy and the recent veto of a farm/subsidy bill by President Ronald Reagan. "It worries me when I look at the United States and see almost an organized onslaught coming from the White House against the agricultural community. Peterson didn't spare the federal Tories from criticism, either. Horticultural society holds March meeting The Lucknow Horticultural Society held their March meeting at the Legion Hall. The president, Mary MacGillivray wel- comed all and read a poem, Somewhere under the Snow. The minutes of the board meeting were read by the nevi secretary, Joyce Swan. Evelyn Henderson gave the treasurer's report. The district representative, Ruth Bogues gave the report on the district plans for the annual meeting to be held in Ripley, April 13. During the business it was decided to renew the magazine subscription that the society places in the local library. Some Irish songs were sung with Edith ' Webster at the piano. Stella Tilbrook chaired the meeting for the program. She read a poem. Myrtle Stonehouse gave a reading and also conducted a contest. , Evelyn Henderson was the winner. Stella gave a history of the Gingko Tree that grows in her yard. Mary Collinson gave a reading on Gardening Hints. The president thanked the committee and closed the meeting. A delicious lunch was served by the committee. . SOUTH KINLOSS by Ruth Buchmeier Mr. and Mrs. F'raser MacKinnon visited on the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. Jim MacKinnon in Guelph. They all attended the 40thwedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Hume. .Congratulation's to Mr. and Mrs. Jim Frayne of Goderich on the birth of a little girl. This' is a granddaughter, for the proud Fraser and Doris MacKinnon. No. 17 Ashfield (Cedar Valley) is being planned for the weekend of Saturday, May 18 and Sunday, May 19 at Brookside School. Uoyd and Doris Hodges and Lillian Turner of Goderich visited on Sunday with Tim and Wanda Hodges. He said politicians have to learn to look beyond the next election. They have to leek to the next decade, and next . generation ifthey hope to solve today's problems. He said the young people graduating from schools need the skills to deal with technological change if they hope to compete in today's job market. "We're not doing a good enough job as a society in giving our young people these skills. Peterson did promise reforms in agricul- ture and new approaches to medical care in Ontario, but he tempered the statement witha promise to "have a pt+ofound respect for the taxpayers wallet."
