been diminished as the resultof eroding land
Values and deteriorating balance sheets.
"As you are aware," he told the largely

that these varieties provide far out weight any
additional costof seed. Naturally, you also
get all the benefits and assurance that come
with every lot of blue tagged, Certified Seed.
- Variety selection is the most important
productiondecision you have to make.
Choosing Certified Seed of the best new
varieties increases the profit potential of your
cropping program It's 'nice to know than
you'll be receiving the benefit of. Canadian
agricultural research at the same time!

e says the association staff is trained as
au Iio-metric technicians to conduct the
hearing test but;he -wams that staff is not
qualified to interpret the results.
"If their test indicates they may have a
hearing problem, we encourage them to see
their family doctor for a referral to a
specialist. We never given them a diagnos-

• would have been $145.82 per tonne while the
average market return for the 1983 crop was
$146.43.
"While no deficiency payments are requir-
ed for these particular crops, the legislation
gives protection to producers in case of
sudden drops in commodity market prices,
giving added -confidence to our farmers and
the entire awl -food sector," Mr. Wise said.
Rural women
from page 9a
are helping to give women the training they
need to start up their own organizations,
Bolton said. Rural women already knew the
issues, she said, but lacking the organiza-
tional and leadership skills, they aren't being,
heard. That, Bolton maintains, is changing.
Neighbour's seed
is no bargain
from page 10a
Because the neighbour's seed has. not been
certified under the auspices of the Canada
Seeds Act, John has no recourse should .a
problem occur:
Certified seed is backed by Agriculture
Canada Inspectors who follow the• seed of
every crop and variety from its origin through
to final packaging for sale. It is inspected in
the seed growers field, and after it has been
cleaned and bagged. The procedures involved
in meeting Certified seed standards ensure
the availability of high' quality seed.
A large part of eventual yield is determined
during the germination and 'emergence
stages. Why try to shave a few dollars from
production costs by planting `over -the -fence'
seed instead'of Certified? Quality seed of the
best varieties is a key ingredient in setting the
stage for bigger, more'profitable yields.
"the availability of operating credit from your
financial institution is generally determined
by your repayment capability.
"Lenders assess the risk involved in
extending credit by analyzing the farmers
historical and projected cash flow figures and
the impact crop production losses or lower
than expected market prices would have on
the cash flow.".
Coates said that bankers and farmers alike
are in the businessof taking chances in the
hope of making profits. He said the successful
ones operating in the 1990s will have
managed these risks using the risk manage:
ment tools that are available in the 1980s.
Coates added that the management of risk
is not aimed ' at eliminating risk Rather, it
involves taking the right risk.
