Neighbour's seed is no bargain
"Our neighbour grew some of that great
new feed barley last year," John told his ;
wife. "He's selling some of it for seed, and 1
figure that we can save over $300 buying fmm
him instead of getting that fancy Certified
stuff from the elevator.
Sure John, you probably will save a few
bucks on the purchase price. But there's a •
good. chance you'll get more than you
bargained for - like an invasion of noxious
weeds that you've spent a decade cleaning
out of your land or a seed borne disease that
will cut your stand by a third. Is it worth
gambling a few bucks on seed that carries no
assurance of quality?
Under the law, seed 'must not be sold by
variety name unless it is pedigreed. The
`bargain' aspect of this purchase. disappears
in a hurry if any one of a multitude of
potential problems coeur in John's cop.
