Buy a bag of pedigreed seed, grow it, harvest the crop, sell it to the neighbours, and you're in the money. _ • Hold on ,a minute! There is a lot mope to seed production than meets the eye. Good Crop production management is part of the package, but the grower must also comply with a host of regulations designed to ensure . that Certified seed is true to its pedigree and • meets all the stringent requirements of the Canadian Seed Growers' Association and the .Canada Seeds Act. To be sure, fanners becomeseed growers in hopes of generating bigger profits from • their operations. The financial rewards are there, but only if the grower produces seed that is- of certifiable quality. Remember, Mother Nature imposes the same harsh disciplines on seed carps that she inflicts on neighbouring fields. There will betimes when.. a seed grower's Trop is rejected because it doesn't meet the strict quality standards that ensure you of getting the best when you , •purdiase . Crops must be continuously monitored right through the growing season to detect the deal with invasion of weeds, off types, other crops, and diseases. Equipment has to be scrupulously cleaned between fields to prevent contamination. Separate storage of harvested seed lots is essential for the same reason.
