Wingham hospital to spend $300,000 on new x-ray equipment
By Henry Hess
The Wingham and District Hospital plans
to spend more than $300,000 this year on the
purchase and installation of new x-ray equip-
ment.
At it's FbbrtrarY meeting the hospital
board agrees to accept a package offered by
the General Electric Company for $308,000 to
supply and install a new machine as well as
service and move the old one, which will be
kept as a backup.
The purchase is conditional on the final
contract being reviewed and accepted by the
board's finance and property committees.
The hospital plans to have the new machine
delivered by June or July in order to fit it into
the construction schedule for the new wing,
which includes expansion of the radiology
department.
The board was told the recommendation to
purchase the GE package followed an exhaust
tive review of three competing offers by Bob
Hollenbeck, the hospital's chief radiology
tedmician, and radiologist Dr. R B. Treleav-
en. .

venhoven, said the group had looked at
proposals from three compdnies, GE, Philips
Both the Phillips and GE are very good
machines, he said, with Phillips probably
holding a slight edge in some features. When
the whole, package. was considered' however,
the GE was ,more attractive, since that
company was willing to move and service the
old machine as part of the deal. 1
Another factor is both the current x-ray
machine and the ultra -sound equipment are
made by GE, he noted, and Hollenbeck told
the committee service on the equipment has
been very good.
The cost of the GE and Thillips, madiines
44va.s very dose, with the Phillips slightly lower
in initial cost. When the extra items ,of
moving the old machine and replacing some
equipment were added, however, it made the
GE offer more economical, the board was
told. The CGR madline was slightly lower in
price but it is a new company, European, 'and
"something of an -unknown quantity,"
Middleton said.
Eventually the board agreed to purchase
the GE equipment, but not without going
through a number of motions, as members
tried to ensure they would be getting exactly
what they had been promised.
