Municipal wage increases
close to provincial guidelines
By Alan Rivett
• A . comparison of wage increases for
municipal employees in the four area munici-
palities of Lucknow, Ashfield, • West Wawa -
nosh and Kinloss indicates local municipal
councils are adhering fairly closely to public
sector wage guidelines established by the
province.
The provincial guidelines linlited wage
inaeases to 5 per cent in the past two years
using compulsory legislation in 1983 and
guidelines last .year that private sector
employers were asked to follow. Ontario
treasurer Larry Grossman announced Febru-
'ary 28, public sector wage increases will be
theld to 3 per cent this year. Most of the public
Sector employees affected work for Ontario
municipalities, school boards, universities,
colleges and hospitals.
The village of Lucknow is the only munici-
pality of the four considered to hold their
honorariums constant since the,introduction
of guidelines in 1983. Lucknow council has
got taken an increase in honorariums, but this
year decided they should be• paid for
committee meetings as well as special council .
meetings: Up to this point, they received $30
for each special meeting of council which they
hold regularly and will now receive $30 for
each committee meeting (recreation commit-
tee, arena board, fire board or medical centre
board) they attend. / •
thcknow is also the only municipality of the
four to negotiate a contract which outlines job
descriptions for its employees and sets wage
structures including wage ceilings, with its
employees.
Implemented in 1983, the salaries for the
deck treasurer, town foreman and'. assistant
foreman 'are designated in.the contract.
Ludknow's Berk -treasurer, Bertha Whit -
croft, was appointed to the position in 1983
and started at a salary .of $17,200. She
received a 7.5 per cent increase to a salary of
$18,500 in 1983; an ' increase of 5.4 per cent
in 1984 to make her salary $19,500 and a 5.1.
per cent increase. to a salary of $20,500 in
1985.
Town foreman Gary Austin received salary
increases of 5.8 per cant in 1983 to increase
his salary to $18,000 and a 5.5 per cent
increase in 1984 to increase his salary to
$19,000. Assistant foreman' Doug Haldenby
did not receive an increase in 1983 when his
