Amnesty group meets at Pine River
South
iver-
South Bruce Adoption Group 97 of
Amnesty International met in Pine River
Church on February 19, with a good attend-
ance. At the March 19 meeting in Kincardine,
Winnifred Robinson will tell about her recent
work in Zimbabwe.
Fbr the Ludmow meeting on April 16, Dr.
Donald Morgenson from Wilfrid Laurie
University has consented to speak on capital
punishment: Some Lucknow branch members
have heard Dr. Morgenson on a previous
occasion. They feel very fortunate to have a
person of his stature address this group.
The local group 97 has recently adopted a
prisoner of conscience who will be the main
focus; of their work until he is released. The
prisoner is Reverend Fekede Hundesa who
was arrested on January 22, 1983. He has
been detained without charge cr trial at
Nekemte prison, Wollega province in Ethi-
opia. Conditions in this prison are reportedly
poor.
Pastor .Hundesa was born in 1949. He is
married with three hildren. He was a pastor
of the Ethiopian Evangelical Mekane Yesus
Church .which is a member of the World
Council of Churches and of the All Africa
Conference of Churches.
The military government in Ethiopia claims
that there is freedom of religion in their
country, however, there seems to be a pattern
of repression against the Mekane Yesus
Church and other churches \ linked with
foreign missionary organizations.
Amnesty International is appealing to the
Ethiopian authorities for the release of church
members, who have been detained without
charge or trial, on amount of their non violent
beliefs or churls activities. The local Al
members have been given the names and
addresses of some 45 Ethiopian officials, to
whom they are writing letters asking for the
release from prison of Reverend. Ftekede
Hundesa.
