Transmission -lines to cross area
farms
To the Editor:
By now many of your readers will have
received maps and letters from Ontario Hydro
telling them where a possible 500 kV
transmission line could be built. I thought
they might be interested in knowing the
history surrounding this project and some of
the things they can now do to stop it.
In the early 1970s Hydro was proposing to
bring several more lines out of the Bruce
Nuclear Power/ Development. This caused
such an uproar that the Royal Commission on
Electric Pbwer Planning was established'to
study this and many other aspects of Hydro'splanning. After several million dollars andseveral years of study and hearings the Porter
Commission recornrnended that one more line
could be built out of Bruce and that it should
have minimum impact on prime agricultural
land.
Hydro then developed various possible
systems and recommended' one which
included aline from Bruce' to London. The
farm commiunity had a hard time. believing
this was the route with the least agricultural
irnpact. A coalition was formed called the
Fbodland Hydro Committee which examined
the proposal.. We presented an alternative
proposal to the hearing board whichwas
studying Hydro's plan. We demonstrated
that a line from Bruce to Barrie would have
much less agricultural impact. In the London
area rebuilding a 115 kV line would minimize
new impacts on agriculture. The hearing
board agreed with us and told Hydro to
proceed with our proposal.
When Hydro had developed this plan to the
stage where they identified specific line
locations a group of land owners and urban
'cottage owners got excited and took Hydro
and the hearing board to court on the legal
question of adequate notice. The .court
nullified the hearing boards decission on this,
legal technicality. This put -Hydro back to
square one and Hydro decided to develop line
locations from Bruce to London. before
proceeding with a new hearing.

publicized and well attended hearings. It
received input from the Ministry of Agricul-
ture and Fbod as well as from concerned farm
groups. I believe it made a wise decision. It
seems unfortunate that 34 days of hearings
were nullified at the last moment by the
action of people who hadn't bothered to be
involved when they had the opportunity;
What can concerned land owners in the
Bruce to London area do now? They need to
get out to the Hydro information, meetings
and make it dear that they expect the line out

Suggests ratepayers co-operate with trustee.
To the Editor:
Concerningthe.ratepayer's meeting held at
Brookside School on Tuesday, February 26. I
was disappointed to see such a small turnout
• at a meeting called by our local trustee on the
Huron County Board of Educationwhen there
are many issues to discuss at this time. Issues
including Family Studies and Industrial Arts,
Computer Technology, basketball nets in the
school gym, twelve. readers for a lass of
twenty four or more students and many other
very important items.
One person told our trustee to start looking
for another job because some ratepayers feel
he is not doing his job effectively. Another
said we should dump the whole salt shaker
and fill it again instead of just dumping 'one
grain of salt.
We must' remind ourselves that he is one of
sixteen and we as ratepayers must get out to
these meetings and tell our tnustee.,what we
.want and listen to him to find out hciw we can
help him achieve what we want done at
Brookside School. I say thirty to thirty, five
taxpayers out of two townships are not
enough.
When the next election comes up, that is

best represent Ashfield and West Wawanosh
Townships on the Board of Fducation. Right
now, why not get out to the next .ratepayer's

like or don't like.
As one gentleman at the meeting said,
"We need more Clickety-Clicks I say
maybe our trustee would like more ratepayers
to give him the right guince and tell him
what our concerns are.
