Lucknow Lancers find scoring touch at season's end
[Intended for last week]
The Lucknow Lancers seemed to have
found their scoring touch late in the
season, coming up with two wins in three
games over the last four weeks.
Str`Clements were first on the Lancer hit
list as the locals walked into the St.
Clements battlefield and came home with a
9 - 6 win. Larry MacPherson got the first
goal unassisted, then Brad Humphrey got
the first of his three goals for an early 2 - 0
Lancer lead. The Saints closed the gap i0 2
- 1 before Jim Murray restored the two goal
lead assisted by Randy Alton and
Humphrey.
St. Clements tied the game early in the
second before Humphrey slapped in a pass
from Paul Hamilton. The Saints tied the
game again but the Lancers got goals from
Larry and Steve- MacPherson, and Jim
Murray for a 7 - 4 lead at the end of two.
Each team got a pair of goals in the
third, Humphrey with his third of the game
and John MacLeod scoring for the Lancers,
to end the game 9 - 6.
Dennis Kerr played a strong game in the
net and Jim Keller played equally well up
forward for the Lancers.
Next on the hit list were the mighty
Wingham Royals who had four consecutive
wins over the Lancers so far this season.
With only two lines to go on, things were
looking pretty shaky before the game
started and early in the second with
Wingham ahead 3 - 1, the Lancers were
down for the count.
Enter Steve MacPherson. . The big
defenseman took a shot from the point on a
power play that was tipped in by Steve
Simpson midway through the second and
then with a minute left in the second
period, Steve MacPherson does his famous
end to end rush around the Wingham
pylons and tucks the puck neatly into the
Royals net.
This tied the game at three and early in
the third period,. Brad Humphrey got his
second of the night which proved to the
winner as the Lancers edged the Royals 4 -
3.
Dennis Kerr played superbly in the
Lancers net as he constantly robbed the
Royal offence. Other notes: John Mac-
Leod's three game scoring streak came to
an end. Lancers extended their winning
streak to four games. Conclusions: Maybe
some relation to Lancer winning streak and
John MacLeod scoring streak.
The Lancers found themselves out of
steam and short of goals Sunday night as
the Exeter Mohawks downed the locals 10 -
6 in Exeter. Lancers held a 3 - 2 lead at the
end of one on goals by Humphrey, Simpson
and Larry MacPherson, but that lead was
short lived as the Mohawks scored four
goals in the second for a 5 - 3 lead at the
end of two.
Lucknow got back in the game when
Dave MacKinnon stole the puck at centre
and blew -one by the Exeter goalie. Larry
MacPherson got his second of the night on
a pas from Humphrey but Exeter put the
game out of reach with .three more goals.
MacPherson got one more for the hat trick
to end the game 10 - 6 in. Exeter's favour.
The Lancers continue their road trip this
weekend as they travel to Mildmay Sunday
afternoon. With the season drawing to a
close, the Lancers seem to have found their
winning form at the right time and hope
they can continue in this fashion come
playoff time.
