•Researches father's roots in clan Mackay
To the Editor:
I trust• you will find the enclosed
information of interest and be able to print
it all or in part in the several publications
which you are connected with. There are a
number of Mackays living in the area who
may not have heard of their Clans
formation.
Our Association is not in a financial
position to pay for this article to be printed.
• Should you find it of interest to your
readers we would appreciate any help you
can offer in the promotion of Clan Mackay.
• Should the Lucknow Sentinel be interest-
ed in running an article, they may also be
interested to know that my father, Wm.
John MacKay was born and raised in
Lucknow under the name of Billy Burns.
He was a member of the Lucknow Pipe P
Band in the years between 1910 to 1915.
1 am still doing research on his parents
and their family of Mackay. His mother
Susanah Burns died in 1886 and is buried
in the Kinloss Cemetery. His father, Angus
John Mackay, died a year later, leaving
• William John and his brother Thomas with
their grandparents on his mother's side.
They raised them as their own sons.
• They did not find out they were Mackays
until it came time to marry. By this time all
• records and those who knew the whole
story were gone.
They assumed the father had gone back,
to Scotland where he then met with an
• accident and died, however; they were told
his father had several brothers whom they
thought lived up around Sault Ste. Marie.
My father died in 1956, not knowing any
member of/his Mackay family. For many
years I have tried to locate these brothers
of my 'grandfathers. This was one of the
main reasons for my starting 'the Clan
Mackay.
I was able .to obtain a few clues from my
cousins in Lucknow and in 1980 when 1
began advertising the formation of our
Clan, I wrote to the Sault Ste. Marie Star.
Two of my long lost cousins conatacted
me to say they thought my grandfather
Angus John was a brother of their fathers,
Malcolm and James. As if turned out they
were two of the nine brothers and one
sister.
In 1981, my husband ' and I drove• to
Thessalon to meet my fathers cousin
Phoebe. What a reunion it was. Phoebe's
sister, Mrs. Belle Reid, lives in Goderich.
She recalls her father speaking of Angus
John and recalled him saying that after. his
accident, he stayed at her father's home.
I am still trying to find, his resting place,
which may be in Lucknow or Thessalon.
The family Bible was lost in a fire, as were
the records in the Presbyterian Church and

passed a Property Standard By-law at a
• special meeting on December 19, which is
still subject to approval, by the Ontario
Municipal Board, and will apply to all
property, within the village limits, I under-
• stand that this By-law has to have three
• readings. Was this done by Lucknow
• Village Council, at one meeting? Should a
• rate payers meeting, not have been called,
to get the public's opinion? /
Before a Bylaw enforcement officer
could enter any dwelling, even with a
• search warrant, doesn't the owner, even
• have some say, under the Canadian Bill of
Rights, to refuse entry, unless there is
valid reason, for entering the premises.
Maybe there is someone else in Lucknow,
wondering about this By -Law.
It is certainly needed, to keep a lot of
• back 'and front yards tidy, to that I do
agree.

TO THE EDITOR.
City Hall located in Thessalon.
On our return drive from Thessalon we
stopped in Goderich and had dinner in the
wonderful Bedford Hotel. I recall my father
telling me about the Bedford when he
drove the stage between Lucknow and
Goderich. He told me of bedding down the
horses in the stable back .of the hotel. I
believe it is a -theatre now.
He always Stayed at the Bedford which
was the best hotel in town. It would have
been between 1900 and 1905e1 plan to visit
Lucknow one day soon and try to look back
in their newspapers for any records of my
