Phone 887-9487 Dorothy Logan heads UCW evening unit The December meeting of the Belgrave A.C.W was held at the home of Mrs. Olive Campbell, opening with the meditation on the theme “Seeing the Vision”, read by the president Mrs. Nancy Jardin. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and the trea­ surer’s report showed a profit of $392 from the recent bazaar. The pot luck supper and Christ­ mas program will be held on December23attheW.I. Hall. A bale of four boxes have been shipped to the Rev. Jacob Winter at Kasabonika. Christmas cards Smiths celebrate 25 years will be sent to the elderly and shut-ins. The election of officers resulted as follows: President, Mrs. Clarke Johnston; Vice-President, Mrs. Robert Procter; Secretary, Mrs. Alex Nethery; Treasurer, Mrs. Harold Jardin. Several readings for winter and Christmas were given by Mrs. Clarke Johnston. Grace was sung and lunch served by the hostess. The Christmas meeting of the Evening Unit of the U. C.W. was held at the home of Mrs. Laura JohnstonTuesday, December 1 with 24 present. During the business period it was decided to give $500 to the General fund of the church and purchase two crock pots for the kitchen. The roll call was answered by a favourite Christmas Carol. Blyth 1/1/7 hears of Philippine Christmas The Worship service and pro­ gram consisted of Christmas stor­ ies, poems and carol singing. There was a discussion on ways members could bring Christ into Christmas with their families, neighbours, community and na­ tion. The following is the slate of officers for 1988: Leader, Mrs. Dorothy Logan; Assistant leader, Mrs. George Procter; Secretary, Mrs Norman Cook; Assistant secretary, Mrs. Gordon Bosman; Treasurer, Mrs. Bert Johnston; Social Committee, Miss Annie Cook and Mrs. Ross Anderson; Community Friendship, Mrs. Laura Johnston; Pianist, Mrs. George Johnston. The meeting closed with the benediction followed by lunch served by Mrs. Ross Anderson and Mrs. George Johnston. Mr. and Mrs. George Mitchell of Wingham held Open House in the W.I. Hall, Belgrave, Sunday, December 6 in honour of their parents Mr. and Mrs. Amos Smith who are celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary. The hall was adorned with silver, pink and white decorations. Amos and Evelyn Smith operat- ed the general store and post office in Belgrave for several years and now make their home in Wingham. Guests attended from Toronto, London, Brussels, Ethel, Cran- brook, Belgrave and the Wingham area. Those who assisted at the open house were Mrs. Elizabeth Gower, Mrs. Sharon Darlow and Miss Kathy Saunders. 13 tables at euchre Calvin-Brick holds concert Miss Lisa Chapman of Bolton is visiting with her grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Wightman. Calvin-Brick United Church held their annual pot luck supper and Sunday School Christmas entertainment Saturday evening, December 5 in the Belgrave W.I. hall. Carols were sung with Mrs. George McGee at the piano. The different classes of the Sunday School put on their little skits and plays and at the last Santa arrived to distribute 54 candy bags to the children. The executive of the Belgrave Branch of the Bible Society reports the total collected this year was $986.50, showing a slight increase over last year. Thirteen tables were in play at the weekly euchre which was held in the W.I. Hall Wednesday, December 2. Winners were: high lady, Mrs. Wilford Caslick; low lady, Mrs. JanisaCoultes; novelty lady, Mrs. Pearl Shiell; lucky draw lady, Mrs. Howard Walker; high man, George Inglis; low man, George Carter; novelty man, Wilfred Walker; lucky draw man, Robert Grasby. There will be euchre again Wednesday, December 8 starting at 8 p.m. Thirty Blyth Women’s Institute members and their guests enjoyed their annual dinner on December 3 at Blyth Memorial Hall. The guest speaker was Rev. Lorenzo Ramirez. His topic “Christmas in the Philippines are very religious, going to church every day for a week before Christmas. In the Philippines they make all their Christmas decorations, asitis too costly to import them. They are made of bamboo wood, tissue paper, coloured cellophane and glue. Rev. Ramirez had made two beautiful ones which he brought to show. He told how to construct these beauties, how to fold and cut the paper and glue together. Then he showed how to make a tail for them and fasten it on. Their Christmas trees are sel­ dom evergreen, because they are too costly. They use another shrub which they cover branch by branch with tissue paper cut in long strips and wound around. Their food also is quite different. ForChristmasdinner they have roast pig. They likereally sweet desserts. They only have apples at Christmas as they have to be imported and are quite expensive. Janette McNeil of Dungannon, decorated the supper tables with beautiful Christmas table centre­ pieces. Jeanette showed how to construct your own table centre­ piece and gave a few tips on how to freshen up a table centrepiece members already had. Members then had the opportunity to buy any Christmas decorations from her beautiful display. Exeter gets provincial grant The town of Exeter has received $65,205 as first payment for a water works project, Environment Mini­ ster Jim Bradley and the Hon. Jack Riddell, MPP, Huron, announced today. The project involves installation of chlorination facilities at the Hicks and Moodie wells. The money is part of an estimated $72,450 grant as a provincial contribution toward the total cost of the project, estimated at $115,000. The project is sche­ duled for completion in December 1987.
