Blyth UCW
hears
of refugees
The worship service of the Blyth
U .C. W. at the Nov. 26 meeting was
conducted by Candice Howson and
Evalena Webster. They based
their meditation on Bible verses
from Matthew, Exodus, and Deu
teronomy.
Mrs. Webster, convenor of
Community Friendship, took an
interesting approach to a study of
refugees in the Human Family.
There are 10 million in the world.
Four members took the parts of
four refugees of different ages,
locations and backgrounds and
read about their hardships and
persecution under dictatorship
and military rule; and privileges
enjoyed after arriving in democra
tic countries. Evalena read an
account from the U.C. Observer of
Mama Nancy Pocock's - methods
ofhelping refugees in Toronto. She
works from her own home, has
helped hundreds of displaced
people find lodging, and has built a
network of refugee helpers from
Mexico to Toronto despite the fact
that refugee counselling can be
come a criminal act.
Susan Howson, president, read
an article she had come across
stating a Christian's Christmas
pledges for this day and age. The
first was about gift giving - to
remember “who really needs my
gifts.”
Secretary Feme McDowell read
the minutes of the June and Sept.
Executive meetings; and read
correspondence: a letter of appre
ciation for gifts received before
leaving Blyth and family news from
Joanne Bauman of St. Thomas; a
thank you expression from Cather
ine Caldwell, secretary of the
Board of Stewards, for money
received; a thank you letter from
Rev. David Woodall of Ontario St.
Church, Clinton for various forms
of help received for the United
Church camp; a thank you from
Adeline Campbell for a card at the
time of her illness; and a request
from the Hall Board for a U.C.W.
member to sit on that Board.
Mary Howson thanked the
committee who had assisted her in
forming the executive for 1988-89
and read the list of the 28 positions
filled. The installation will take
place at the Dec. 14 Christmas
meeting at the manse.
Treasurer Edelgard Hoba’s
comprehensive financial report
handed out made g-uod reading. It
covered receipts and expenditures
from Sept. 24 - Nov. 26. The
“McClure" Dinner Theatre, the
last project for 1987, was found to
be very rewarding.
The Evening Units’ provision of
trays of attractive and delicious
Christmas petit fours gave the 23
members in attendance their first,
perhaps, generous smacks of
Christmas goodies to come.
