From the Minister's Study
The best thing is knowing the ending
BYBOBBARNHART
PASTOR CHURCH OF GOD,
BLYTH
After the evening service one
Sunday I went home and turned on
the T.V. to the sports channel.
There was a football game on and
mv favourite team was playing. I
sat down to watch.
What made this different was
the game had already played
earlier and was taped. 1 knew who
was going to win because 1 had
heard the score on the news earlier.
1 could sit back and enjoy the game
knowing that at the end my team
was going to win.
1 thought about that in relation to
the Christian life. I will have
struggles and problems but in the
end I will win because Jesus Christ
has already won the victory. Jesus
Christ totally defeated Satan on the
cross.
Another thing about watching
thatgamewasthatldidn’t know all
that was going to happen. Yet ...
even if the other team seemed to be
doing well 1 knew my team would
win. I didn’t know how but I knew
they would. Paul is saying the same
thing in 2 Corinthians 2:14; "But
thanks be toGod. who always leads
us in triumphant procession in
Christ and through us spreads
everywhere the fragrance of the
Knowledge of him.”
There were problems in the
Corinthian Church and at this point
he didn’t know if they had been
solved. Paul had sent Titus then
and was to meet him at Troas tofind
out the results. But Titus hadn’t
shown up there. We know that
from 2 Corinthians 2:12-13. Paul
was not sure what things were like
in Corinth not finding Titus. Then
he writes verse 14. Paul wasn’t
sure of the results but he knew that
in Christ there was victory.
It is also important to realize
when Paul uses the words "trium
phant procession’ ’ he is thinking of
a Roman Triumph. Any General in
the Roman army who totally
defeated an enemy on foreign soil,
killed at least 5,000 of the enemy
and gained new land for the
emperor was entitled to a Roman
Triumph. A Roman Triumph was a

Rev. Lorenzo Ramirez spoke on
facing difficulties of life Sunday
morning in Blyth United Church.
He based his remarks on the story
of the woman who touched Jesus’
side as told in Mark 5: 24-34. He
said that when problems last and
last, life can become a burden and
weiookforany way out. He said
‘ ‘This story tells us that the woman
never lost hope. She never lost
faith in God or people or herself. In
these different times we can lose
faith in God, people and ourselves,
"but,” he said, "we must remem
ber that God is always there
waiting to help.”
The choir sang the anthem
"Hiding in Thee” with Marjorie
McNall at the organ. The ushers
were Gordon and Catherine and
Gary Caldwell and Jean Woods.
Greeters were Bill and Susan
Howson.
procession through the city. It
consisted of theRoman General
riding in a golden Chariot sur
rounded by his officers.
The spoils were also included
along with the captives. Roman
Priests also were in the procession
burning incense to Roman Gods.
The procession followed a specific
route that would end at the Circus
Maximus (a colliseum). Here the
crowds were treated to watch the
captive fight wild beasts.
Jesus Christ came to earth from
heaven which is foreign soil. Jesus
totally defeated Satan on the cross.
He didn’t kill 5,000 people rather
He gave his life to countless
thousands. Jesus Christ has al-
ready won the victory. Where do
we fit in? The General’s Children
were to follow behind the chariot
and be part of the procession. By
accepting Christ as my Saviour I
am a child of God and follow behind
Christ in the procession.
Jesus Christ has won the
Victory! I still will have struggles
and problems but if 1 can remem
ber Jesus Christ has won the
victory He will help me win the
victory in the battles of life. The
biggest battle, death, has already
been conquered. 1 John 5:13 says
“Iwrite these thingstoyou who
believe in the name of the Son of
God, so that you may know that you
have eternal life.”
