First Brussels bonspiel held Over the past weekend the Brussels Crusaders participated in the Drayton Invitational Interme diate Tournament where they claimed the “A” Championship. In their first game on Saturday theCrusaders defeated St. Cle ments 5 to 1. Ken Cousins and Dave Stephenson teamed up to score the first goal while the team was shorthanded. Stephenson in terrupted a pass in the centre ice area and fed Cousins a nifty pass to send him in alone on the goalie and Ken made no mistake by easily deking the goalie. St. Clement’s tied the score when they notched a powerplay marker late in the first period. The Crusaders came out flying in the second period and scored three unanswered goals. Mike Watson banged in the rebound on a Brian Ten Pas shot to give the Crusaders a 2 to 1 lead. Ken Cousins scored his second goal of the game on a another nice set up from Dave Stephenson. Kevin Deitner com pleted the scoring in the second period when he scored a short- handed goal on a nice backhand to the bottom righthand corner of the net. The Crusaders scored the only goal of the third period when Mike Watson scored his second goal of the game assisted by Cousins and Stephenson. In their first game on Sunday the Crusaders met the Milverton squad. Dave Montgomery opened the scoring when he picked up an errant pass at centre ice, deked the Milverton defense and went in alone on the goalie whom he beat cleanly with another excellent deke. Milverton tied the score at the midway mark of the first period. Inthesecond period Brussels . scored two goals in just over a minute to take the lead. Dave Montgomery scored his second goal of the game on a set up from Ken Cousins and Trevor Pocaluy ko. Brian Ten Pas blasted a pass from Dave Stephenson into the top left hand corner to up the Brussels lead to 3 to 1. In the third period the Crusaders outscored Milverton 3 to 1 to clinch the victory. Kevin Deitner scored the first goal of the period on an assist by Randy Clarke. Dave Montgomery completed his hat trick when he deked the Milverton goalie as he was sent in alone on passes from Troy Pocaluyko and Brian Ten Pas. Milverton scored a power play goal midway through the period to cut the Crusaders lead to 5 to 2. Ken Cousins completed the scoring when he scored an unassisted goal late in the period. After a two-hour wait for the B Championship game to be played, the Crusaders met a fired up Monkton squad in the Champion ship final. Monkton came out flying in the first period while it appeared the Crusaders thought they just had to show up to win the game. After six minutes of play Monkton had fired three goals by a bewildered Mike Smith. Slowly the Crusaders came to life and started to mount some offensive pressure. However Monkton goalie Bob Ward made several key saves to keep Brussels off the scoresheet until late in the second period. Ken Cousins scored the first Crusader goal when he deposited a pass from Dave Stephenson behind the Monkton goalie. Trailing by two goals, the Crusaders started the third period looking anything but a team that wanted to win. Monkton stormed the Brussels goal early in the period forcing goalie Mike Smith to make several key saves. Gradually the Crusaders came to life and they scored a powerplay goal midway through the period to cut Monkton’s lead to one goal. Randy Clare left unattended at the side of the net tapped in a pass from Kevin Deitner and Ken Higgins to ignite a Crusader comeback. From this point on the Crusaders swarmed the Monkton zone trying to get the equalizer. With five minutes remaining Ken Cousins completed a pretty three way passing play as he fired a shot into the top corner to tie the score. Assists on the goal went to Dave Stephenson and Len Stam per. The winning goal was scored with two minutes remaining as Dave Montgomery tipped in a Mike Watson slapshotfrom the point. Troy Pocaluykoalso assisted on the goal. Excitement was added to the game when Dave Montgomery was awarded a penalty shot with 24 seconds remaining. The Monkton goalie continued his strong play when he stopped Montgomery when he tried to deke him. The Crusaders held off the Monkton team in the dying seconds to claim a 4 to 3 victory and the Championship. Crusader de fenceman Len Stamper was made the Tournament M. V.P. for his steady play on the Brussels blueline.• The Crusaders play their home opener this Saturday in a rematch with the same Monkton team at 8 p.m. It should be a terrific game. If anyone is interested in being part of the Crusader’s executive they are asked to attend a meeting on Thursday night at 8 p.m. at the B.M. & G Community Centre. Your support would be greatly appreciated. WRAP UP CHRISTMAS^^i EARLYJ^al• • • FAMILY RINGS AND DAUGHTER’S PRIDE RINGS We’re taking orders now for Christmas! Don’t be disappointed - act now!
