Phone 887-9487 Mrs. Eccles Dow celebrates 90th birthday 100 attend library open house Approximately 100 adults and children attended the opening of the newly loca jsd library which is following Thursday, November 5. Friends and neighbours of this community wish to extend con­ gratulations to Mrs. Eccles Dow in honour of her 90th birthday, October 28. Many relatives, friends and neighbours gathered in the Sunday School room of Knox United Church, Belgrave on Sunday, October25tohelp celebrate the 90th birthday of Mrs. Eccles Dow. Mrs. Dow was born October 28, 1987 and has lived all her life in EastWawanoshTownship. Her parents were the late John Bee­ croft and Adeline McGee. Her brothers Melville Beecroft of Barrie and Gilbert Beecroft of RR 1, Belgrave and one sister Mrs. Hector (Beatrice) Hamilton of Gorrie were in attendance for the happy occasion. OnDecember31,1923 Eccles married Wellington Dow and they farmed on the 10th Concession of East Wawanosh where she still resides. Mr. Dow died in 1942. Mrs. Dow’s family, Mrs. Ross (Ada) Taylor; Mrs. Jasper (Eva) Snell; Nelson, Donald and Ivan all of East Wawanosh and 10 grand­ children were all in attendance. Greetings were received from the Govenor-General; Prime Mini­ ster; Premier of Ontario and local members of Parliament. After extending best wishes to Mrs. Dow all enjoyed a birthday tea catered to by the Calvin-Brick United Church Women and served by the grandchildren. Friends were in attendance trom London, Brockville, Wasaga Beach, Brantford, Toronto, El­ mira, Stratford, Mitchell and the surrounding area. People Miss Edna Henshaw of New Westminster, B.C., Mrs. Winni- fred Johnston of Wingham accom­ panied Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Stonehouse to Petrolia on Thurs­ day andFriday tovisitwithMr. and Mrs. Maitland Edgar and family. now situated in thd W.I. Hall in Belgrave. During the afternoon a puppet show was enjoyed by childrenand adults. Coffee and doughnuts were served. Mr. and Mrs. Conrad Smithson of Downsview visited with Mrs. Elizabeth Procter over the week­ end. On Friday they all visited with Mr. and Mrs. Howard Zettler and family of RR 4, Walkerton. On Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Frank Procter and family. All library books must be returned to the library by October 31 for branch exchange the 12 tables at Belgrave euchre I Twelve tables were in play at the weekly euchre party held in the Belgrave W.I. Hall, October 21. Winners were: high lady, Mrs. Alma Jardine; second high, Mrs. GeorgeDrehmann; lone hands, Mrs. Gertrude Allen; low lady, Mrs. Mary Chamney; high man, Clarence Hanna; second high, Gordon Loultit; lone hands, Mrs. Ronald Coultes; low man, Mrs. Iona McLean. There will be euchre again Wednesday, October 28. Ethel 4H club learns pleasures of fruit The Ethel I 4H “Fruit and Vegetable" club’s third meeting was held at Brenda Gibbon’s on Oct. 13. Members started the meeting with the 4H pledge. Everyone showed their advertisement. The secretary read the minutes. Fol­ lowing roll call they split up in groups and made boiled, micro- waved and steamed carrots. The microwaved and steamed were the most popular. Everyone chopped cauliflower, broccoli, carrots and onions for the stir fry. It was delicious. They closed the club with the 4H motto. The club’s fourth meeting was held at Brenda Gibbon’son Oct. 20. They started the meeting with the4H pledge. Everyone said what their favourite Ontario fruit was. Following roll call they did “Taste the Season ’ ’. Then they had time to work on speeches. A couple of girls prepared Fruit Sparkled Sauce. Everyone agreed it was deliciou s with ice cream. The meeting ended with the 4H motto.
