Local enrollment down by only 1 pupil
Overall enrollment in the seven
elementary schools in The Citi
zen’s reporting area has remained
remarkably consistent over the
past year, down by only one pupil
since last June. Total enrollment
this week stood at 1,516 students in
Kindergarten to Grade 8, compar
ed to 1,517 who finished the school
year in June.
However, there have been a
number of staff changes in most
schools, including a few new faces,
some transfers and leaves of
absence, and a couple of retire
ments.
At Brussels Public School, Phil
Parsons has come from Howick
Central School to teach music and
French part-time, as well as to
serve as part-time school resource
teacher. He replaces Mary Hueth-
er, who retired last June after
many years of teaching Grades 1-2.
Lynne Henry, Brussels’ resource
teacher in 1986-87, will teach
kindergarten half-time this year,
while Kim Blake, last year’s
kindergarten and music teacher,
will take on Grade 2. Enrollment at
Brussels is 181. down from 183 last
June.
Blyth Public School has two new
teachers to replace Graham Yeats
and Bill Marsh who were trans
ferred toother schoolslast June, as
well as a new part-time librarian.
Bob Livermore has come from Grey
Central to teach Grade 6; Rudy
Hooftman has been transferred
from Brookside School to teach
French in the mornings and Grade
5 in the afternoons; and Karen
Webster, a former supply teacher,
will serve as the school’s librarian.
Blyth has 206 students, up from
195 in June.
At East Wawanosh Public
School, teachers Cheryl Hessels
and Jane Wilson have traded
places, with Ms. Hessels moving
from teaching kindergarten half
time to teaching Grade 2 full time,
and Ms. Wilson giving up her
full-time Grade 2 position to take
on the half-time kindergarten. As
well, Sandra Green has come to
replace former Grades 7-8 teacher
Bill Chaulk, who has been trans
ferred to Turnberry Central Public
School. There are 190 students
enrolled at East Wawanosh, up
from 185 last June.
Grey Central Public School
reports 234 students registered,
fivefewer than were enrolled in
June. Teacher Bob Livermore has
been transferred to Blyth Public
School, while Marlene Starkey has
moved into teaching Grade 3 on a
full-time basis from her half-time

Fourteen members attended the
meeting of Melville Guild held in
the church parlour on September
15.
In the absence of the president,
Margaret Work conducted the
business. Ethel Brewer and Helen
Elliott are preparing the entry for
the Fairwhich is called “Colour Me
Blue.”
Elizabeth Jamieson in charge of
devotions told of “The Feasts As
Given By God” namely The
Festival of Passover, The Festival
of Pentecost and The Festival of
Tabernacles. A tape entitled “The
Final Vision,” highlighted the
eveningwithJohn’sviewof A New
Heaven and A New Earth from the
book of Revelations. Ethel Brewer
and Elizabeth Jamieson served
refreshments.

teacher. Bill Millson has also
returned from a year’s leave to take
over Grade 8; librarian and special
education teacher Lillian Hallam
has taken a position at the School
Board office in Clinton; former
kindergarten teacher Glenda Wal
ter takes on Grade 1; and Brenda
Pincombe has been transferred
from Huron Centennial School to
teach Kindergarten. As well,
formerly supply teacher Peter
Snell has been hired to teach music
on a half-day basis, and to serve as
school librarian for the other half
days.
At Brookside Public School,
special resource teacher Mary
Bere has retired, to be replaced by
Bill Farnell, who has been trans
ferred from Howick; and Margriet
Knetsch has been hired to teach
French in place of Rudy Hooftman,
who has been transferred to Blyth.
A third new teacher, Paul Spittai,
uas been hired to teach Grades 5-6.
The area’s largest school by a
substantial margin, Brookside re
ports 379 students, down slightly
from the 386 registered last June.
The area’s smallest school,
Walton Public School, reports no
staffchangesfrom 1986-87, but
says enrollment has risen to 80
from last June’s 77. Walton has 20
children in Kindergarten, 20 in
Gradel, 22 inGrade 2, and 18in
Grade 3, the highest grade offered.
