Letters to the editor
Writer disapproves
of arena board actions
TO THE PEOPLE OF BLYTH AND
AREA:
I was going through the job
description being handed out to
those interested in the position of
manager of the Blyth Arena, which
recently became vacant, and
couldn’t help but wonder about a
few questions that came to my
mind.
It is interesting that the job
description noted vaguely some of
the different responsibilities of the
manager without saying anything
about time off, weekends off, hours
per week, and holidays.
Regarding another point, 1
happen to have seen the last
manager carrying tools, etc. up to
the arena, and I also know for a fact
that the lawnmower used there did
not belong to the arena.
In addition, to devise a five-year
Capital Forecast annually with the
Arena Board would be impossible.
The general costs could be put
against the set fee for arena use,
but, for example, the board has
turned away money that could have
been received through day-time
events. This money might not
amount to the regular fee for use,
but because hydro would not be
necessary in day-time there would
be almost total profit for the Arena
Board. The example I have in mind
here is the $500 offered by the
Blyth Theatre, which was turned
down, as noted in the arena board
minutes for June 8, 1987. It makes
no sense to let the arena sit empty
in such a case.
The former arena manager was
always pleasant with the public,
even on those infrequent occasions
when he had to deal with intoxicat
ed persons and or minors and
didn’t have enough manpower to
be confident of having sufficient
control.
Obviously, the board members
feel the need to spent extra dollars
in the future, with a manager, a
full-time staff member, and a
part-time person. Until now, the
arena has been able to function
with one full-time employee and a
seasonal for ice-time events.
I just hope that the people of
Blyth and area are aware of these
extra costs and that they will
eventually become the burden of
the public. I don’t envy anyone the
jobof arenamanager, and know
how difficult it can be to work
directly with boards and/or man
agement groups.
Maybe we, the citizens of the
town of Blyth, should be question
ing the ability of the Blyth Arena
Board.
A Concerned Citizen
THE EDITOR,
My son has been living in
Belgrave and working at CKNX in
Wingham for one year now. I have
been up to visit him several times
and instantly fell in love with that
area. I just couldn’t say enough
wonderful things about it and its
“real people’’. I’m so glad my son
was lucky enough to find a place
like this to live and work.
Since we too come from a farm in

to visit Andy.
Hewas homefora weekend at
the beginning of August and
brought me your newspaper “The
Citizen”. I was amazed at the
amount of area coverage you had,
loved the classified ads and was
very impressed with the informa
tion directory. I only wish coming
events and auction sales could be
advertised a full week or more
previous to sale date so we would
have a chance to get to the events. I
passed my copy of The Citizen on to
my neighbours and they are
leaving Saturday for a holiday in
your district, so you see your paper
is being read and enjoyed in the
Ottawa Valley.
Please add my name to your
subscription list. Looking forward
to receiving The Citizen in my mail
box.
Best of luck,

Dr. Hay congratulated
THE EDITOR,
I wish to congratulate Dr. Hay on
the opening of his new office in
Blyth. It will be a considerable
convenience for his Blyth patients.
Last fall, my office schedule
became very busy and I found it
necessary to suggest to Dr. Hay,
that he might find office space
elsewherein Blyth. Iwas some

I have had enquiries indicating
