Coaches Coulter and Steep will replace head coach Joe Steffler of Walton and assistant coach Hugh Nichol of Brussels, both of whom resigned at the end of last season. Mr. Steffler, however, has return ed to serve as club president for the new season, replacing 1986-87 presidentBrian Heuther, while Mr. Nichol will remain as a member of the executive. Marlene Rutledge will remain as the Bulls’ secretary, while Diane Heuther will replace Lynn Steffler as treasurer of the club. Mr. Stretton brings a lot of experience to the new position, having served as manager of the Brussels Bulls in both 1984-85 and 1985-86, and as a member of the executive in 1983-84. He also managed Brussels’ Intermediate team, the Crusaders, last season, and served as the Crusaders representative in organizing last week-end’s major ball tournament in Brussels, which was sponsored event when heavy rains swept through the area on Sunday. However after hours of patient waiting and the expertise of Wayne Lowe who managed to have the diamond in good playing condition within an hour after the rain stopped, action resumed on Sun day at 4 p.m. Other first round winners were: Teeswater 6 - 5 over Kitchener Casey’s Restaurant; Cambridge Hostess 6 - 5 over Kitchener Protel; BluevaleJuniors4-3 over Clifford; Waterloo Ultramar 8 - 5 over Camlachie Juniors; Walton3 - 2 over Ingersoll and Sebringville 5 - 0 over Brampton. Fullarton took home $300. Clifford also took home $300 and the consolation trophy. In all, $1,600 in prize money was handed out. jointly by the Crusaders and the Brussels Optimist Club. Mr. Stretton says that he is now in the process of issuing invitations topotential Junior D players for the coming season, asking them to take part in the club’s upcoming training camps, which are sche duled to begin by mid-September. The rotating camps will take place over four weekends, and will likely be held for one weekend in each of Listowel, Mitchell and Wingham, and finally in Brussels early in October, just prior to the beginning of the new season. He says that the team hopes to again sign last year’s star players as Tim Fritz, Kevin McArter, Marty Rutledge, Jeff McGavin, Paul Robinson, Bill Haines and Paul Edwards, as well as Dean Wheeler who played with the Brussels Midgets last season. But he adds that some players will likely have to be recruited from such places as Stratford, Wingham and Bly th, none of which have a local Junior D team, because there simply are not enough Junior D age players in Brussels. ‘ ‘This is not an unusual situation in a town this size,” he says, Continued on page 20 The Brussels Crusaders and Optimists wish to extend a hearty thank you to the Stratford Umpires Association particularly Vic, Ken and Brian for their fine officiating, to Wayne Lowe for not only his assistance with organizing the tournament and being chief groundskeeper but for hosting the Umpires throughout the whole weekend, and to anyone who helped at the gates during the tourney.
