People ENGAGEMENT Dog show attracts 500 entries Last week, well over 500 artisto- cratic individuals representing more than 100 different breeds of dogs gathered at the Blyth and District Community Centre to take part in the 17th and 18th dog shows and obediance trials sponsored by the Bluewater Kennel Club of Huron County. It was the fifth year in a row that the royal-blooded animals have been shown in Blyth, and the ninth year that shows have been presen ted by the Bluewater Club. Dogs and their owners began arriving in trucks and campers last Monday evening, in preparation for the day-long shows on both Tuesday and Wednesday, July 7 - 8. Many exhibitors camp out at the com munity centre grounds, vying for shady spots where their dogs can relax in special cages and pens until their turn in the show ring arrives. Conformation show chairman Florence Pullen of RR 4, Clinton said that 528 different dogs were shown on Tuesday, and 533 on Wednesday, but explains that many of the same dogs will be shown on both days, but under different judges, giving them the maximum opportunity to win points towards their Canadian championships, which must be earned under a minimum of three judges. For this reason, a two-day show such as this is considered as two separate shows for both the conformation classes and the obedience trials, where each dog must earn at least 175 points out of 200 in order to qualify, and must obtain three qualifying scores before winning the designation Companion Dog (CD), the first step in long climb to obedience perfec tion. Lynn Flowers of Clinton served as Obdience Trial chairman for the Blyth show. Mrs. Pullen, who herself breeds Irish Setters, says that since local club members are not permitted to show dogs at any show sponsored by their own club, very few local dogs will ever be seen at the Blyth Show. However, some local own ers may drop their membership in order to show their dogs, or never join the local club in the first place, such as Cathy and Jim Landsbor- oughofRR4, Seaforth, who this year showed an Old English Sheepdog in the conformation classes, or Fran and Bill Talbot of Bayfield who exhibited their Soft- coated Wheaten Terriers. The Bluewater Kennel Club Shows are part of a two-week circuit, which includes two days of Continued on page 22 Mr. and Mrs. Laurence Camp bell, Alberta, have been visiting with Mrs. Mary Campbell, Blyth.
